You did get some good alternatives to consider didn't you?

Well it is a pretty wide range of devices and without knowing more of what you are really looking for it is hard to comment. If you are still trying to make up your mind and need to compare features and whatnot, you really need to do the research yourself as you are the only one that knows what you want. Do not rely on any of these shops to answer all yours questions.

With that said, I would suggest that unless (or even if) you are a local, regular and/or speak thai, you will always have to be careful when you buy this stuff.

I am sure there are more reputable vendors but there are only 2 vendors I will buy from at MBK: NASA and Lee Chen. NASA tends to have OEM devices and lower prices but do not expect a smooth sales job, customer service, etc. They work because they have good equipment at a good price and that is all. Lee's generally has OEM devices as well and you get more of a showroom presentation (and eye candy) customer service etc (at least before you buy). But the prices are generally a little higher.

Jay Mart is a chain that specializes in mobile phones and carriers most of the new models and brand names. A good place to go to see and feel the units and get some remaining questions addressed. They are all over the place. You can go to Siam Paragon 3rd floor (?) to see the current Nokia, LG, etc and there is a Jay Mart store around there too. THey tend to be a little more expensive than the hole-in-the-wall shops but far more reliable IMHO. THe best thing about Paragon is that is relatively calm shopping / browsing experience where you can take your time and not feel like you are being rushed.

you can go to http://www.jaymarts.com to see their product lines and prices. It is in thai and did not see an english version but you can get a general idea from the site.

Pantip and IT Mall have plenty of phone stalls and a couple of stores that specialize in PDAs but I cannot recall their names at this point. Like with MBK, you have to be careful and I tend to avoid a purchase there. I would buy a PDA from a couple shops but most would be avoided.

My 2 baht worth........

jj,

are you looking for a good PDA or a cell replacement??

Fortune Town has a few shops (one quite large near the the upper floor Apple shop) that carries most PDAs and cells, (0 2, dopods, HP and others) with lots of accessories and stuff...

my friend ended up with the SE P990 although he had the older P900 for the past 3 years, and that needed some serious repairs after being dropped and damaged countless times before... he also has a O 2 but sold it as well, due to a loss of cross functionability and other issues

you might go to check it out, Jaymart carries it for 28,900 everywhere Jaymart is, but he picked it up at some shop in MBK for 27,500.... my only caveat, is that there was such a huge price drop on this model in the last 2 months. saying that the older model P900 and P900i held their prices for over a year at least...

I'm thinking of buying the Cingular 8525 g3 etc.. I can't figure out if I will be able to use this phone with a Thai sim card this summer. I see g3 listed as pending for July, but I would think the phone would be good to go already through some other connect method. I don't know a thing about this stuff. I'm simply concerned with phone/texts calls. I'm not in need of all the pda functions. I may need to get it unlocked as well. Any help appreciated. Thx

I strongly suggest you decide what device/model # you want before you go. Research on the net for the things you need/desire; how small, mp3 player, video player, video recorder, audio record, price range, etc, etc. Knowing this can then let them show you what other things they have to sell and unless your research was thin, you will just shop for the best price on your selected model.

Too easy to end up with something which isn't quite right for you. Do the work before you go.

There are some PDA reviews here http://asia.cnet.com/reviews/handhelds

I bought an O2 a month or so back from a shop in Central World. Very helpful guy, spoke good English and let me play around with the phones for a while. He had O2, Dopod and Asus brands amongst others.

3G simply means it will support 3G systems, in addition to traditional means of connection - GPRS, GSM, etc... Cingular sells GSM phones, and Thailand's SIM cards are GSM based. You may need to get it unlocked, though you can get that done easily enough here:

http://iunlock.com/shop/product_info.php?products_id=791

I'm sure some hack in MBK can do it as well, but I trust iunlock (above) with my phones.

You'll be fine.
