Yes, the period before Job's return was dismal, Apple was inconsequential. I wonder what the CEO transitional plan is? The Woz wanted to come back to Apple but Jobs nixed that plan.

Maybe they have a Disney plan, by the way Eisner is available. When Jobs dies Apple will decapitate Jobs and cryogenically freeze his head. Then when there is a cure for pancreatic cancer, Apple can clone Jobs and Apple has a new CEO.

If Jobs goes so does Apple down the toilet. We seen what happened last time.
That was a very different situation, as he was forced out by management that proved to be inept at what they were doing - likewise, one may argue that Jobs was not yet mature enough to pull off what he was able to do later on.

He often stated that the best thing that happened to him was to have gotten fired from his own company, a statement I happen to agree with.

The current situation is very different, as a very adept and diversified management team, and management process is in place - certainly, without Jobs, Apple would have a rough initial time, as it would need to prove itself to investors from scratch, but I do believe that with the current team and structure, they should be able to do so, after 1-2 years.

If I were Apple's service providers, I would be pissed off at the inept manufacturing and supply chain management skills.
How so? Can you elaborate?

I always get a bit of a chuckle when MAC folks talk about how much less they tend to be affected by viruses and such as compared to PC/Windows folks. Generally they seem to think this has more to do with how wonderful and innovative Apple is as opposed to the relatively low number of MAC users and therefore the smaller target they are for those that wish to do harm via viruses and such.

The iphone on the other hand is another story in that Apple is a big target for the devious types of the techno world. And low, and behold it seems that the iphone does have some security issues. Could it be the Apple engineers really are not as sharp as the Apple maniacs would lead you to believe?

Additionally, I'm a bit uneasy about the health of Jobs. There is no company on Earth more closely associated with its CEO than Jobs. Yesterday in the conference call, when Oppenheimer said it was a "private matter," AAPL dropped another $6/share instantaneously--and that was AFTER it had already lost $10/share.

The problem with calling it a "private matter," is that it is inconsistent with how AAPL handled Job's health in June. Just last month, they gave a specific, benign reason for his unhealthy appearance (common bacterial infection). Now, a month later, AAPL is suddenly unspecific and mum on the issue. Why the change in tone? This inconsistency is very mysterious. If it was truly a simple stomach bacteria, wouldn't they just confirm that Jobs is over it?

Secondly, when a CEO is as closely linked to the performance of its company as Jobs is, it simply isn't a "private matter." Unfortunately it is very public, as it would have drastic consequences on the value of the stock. Withholding such consequential information would be a breech in AAPL's public obligation to its shareholders.

Yea, many don't quite see it as a private matter:

And it has been widely reported that Jobs had a whipple (had his inners scrambled a bit) which ain't exactly a benign common bacterial infection:

I can only take so much of this tread at one time, so I’ll go ahead and get this bit out of the way while I am at it.

Here are a couple of links to recent reports related to US, and worldwide PC shipments. Apple don’t make the top 5 world wide, and are sitting at either a distant (way distant) third or forth in the US. In the US both Acer is neck n’ neck with Apple, but in world wide sales they kill the forbidden fruit.

Also because of the relative low market share that the fruit has, many fruit fanatics want to focus attention on increase in market share. Which can be a relative issue to discuss. However, big bad Dell out did the fruit on this front as well –according to Gardner Dell gained 2.2% while the fruit gained 2.1%, and according to IDC Dell gained 2.4% and Acer gained 2.4%, both outpacing Apples 1.6% gain. Too bad Apple did not make the list for worldwide sales are we could take a look at those numbers as well.

Daffy you need to get you iPhone connected to the Internet and read the poor showing of estimating demand, inadeqate supply and inability to predict restocking levels. So much for Apple's adept and diversified management team, and management process is in place -

With the iPhone 3G not even ten days old, virtually all of the Apple retail store stores open within the United States are without any examples of the device to sell on July 21st.

The shortage is severe enough in the 38 states that claim Apple stores that it's easier to count the locations that do have iPhone 3G units than those that don't.

In California, the only Apple store with any iPhones is the Pleasanton store with only 16GB black examples, while New York City's Fifth Avenue store is the only one in all of New York state known to have any examples left, with just 16GB white models in stock.

Only a single Honolulu store and the Salem, New Hampshire store can also claim to have any units available, and each only lists one model as ready for Monday.

Apple has been continually resupplying its stores with new iPhones -- in many cases on a daily basis -- but has seen fewer and fewer of its stores touting next-day availability in the several days since the July 11th debut of the handset upgrade.

The company's own outlets are already seen as the bellwethers for looming American shortages. Sellouts first crept up in late March for Manhattan-area stores but quickly spread through the rest of the country and to AT&T locations in a matter of weeks.

For iPhone 3G, shortages manifested as early as launch day and have spread much more quickly than for the end days of the first model, with AT&T running dry of any guaranteed units before the first weekend was over.

Whether or not Apple's supply will meet demand in time to prevent a repeat of May's complete stockout is also far from certain. When grilled on an unprecedented spike in preorders, Britain's iPhone carrier O2 said it might take "some weeks" before it could satisfy enough of its customers on a regular basis.

Steve Jobs should take a page out of Jenna Jameson the porn star’s playbook. When she was young she made tons of porno’s and stashed them away in a vault. Then she started her own production company and releases one video a month that still shows a young Jenna while in reality she is past he used by date.

Steve should design enough new products for the next five years. Then he can be replaced by a Bobble head doll dressed in a black turtle neck. It only has to say a couple of things like:

“You Idiots” For his inept manufacturing group

And

“Bill you still Suck and the only thing that sucks more than you is Vista”

Maybe he has Aids. I mean how many straight guys dress in turtlenecks? Hence the Red series of Ipods.
Hey I bought one, anything to help Steve out.

Odd, as, while the article holds true for the ONE DATE, the 21st, it appears that there is ample stock to keep the lines manageable, and supplied since then (except at AT&T stores, which will be backordered for another week and a half).

http://www.topmuffin.com/3g-iphone-availability

Looks to me like plenty of stores have iPhones in stock and being delivered.

It also bears noting that the 21st was a Monday - coming out of a Weekend, particularly with no deliveries and shipments on Sunday, 'observing' a stock shortage is not exactly investigative journalism.

From where I am standing, the Apple management team is doing just fine.

Just for iduck clarification this is being posted from my first generation iPhone. On the first intro day of 3G iPhone, I took my 20 giga iPod that needed a new battery and told the iIdiot so and my 5th gen 30 giga iPod which would not sync to the local Apple store. I was told by the Apple iIdiot I would be contacted within 24 hours by an Apple tech. I was not contacted by Apple until 72 hours later and told the 20 giga needed a new battery. Duh, that's what I told Apple and asked to have replaced. The 30 giga iPod is syncing fine according to Apple. Over week and nothing from Apple.

Another great example of Apple's loyality to previous customers and I didn't mention the free pizzia for 3g customers only.
