Maybe this is the perfect place to sort out a thing I have been wondering about. I am quite "tech" interested and love most things with LED lights and a lots of buttons!

But I never was swept along this MP3 wave and never even considered buiyng one of those small players - until my friend who takes of my offices all servers, computers etc one day gave me the smallest thing I have seen - an Ipod Shuffle! Took me only a short while to figure out how it worked and I downloaded 300 songs - who to my very surprise lasted all the way to LOS in the plane and with a darn good sound quality too! I had heard people say that this tech reduces the quality of sound. Since then I bought some even better ear phones and to my ears at least - I just cant understand how that little stampsized thing can give 10 hrs of continous entertainment and great sound!

I have loads of old vinyls and CD´s - that I never play. Now I am impressed and I want to go further!

So I am planning to ASAP get a better (or the BEST really!) Ipod or similar on the market - and then back home during dark winter evenings prep my little machine with all my fav music!

So I have checked a little bit on the net what´s available - and of course I am now more confused. There seems to be many different models.

Guess I can find out myself - but with the expertise on these matters seemingly available here: why not ask anyone out there: which of the Ipods (or similar) should I purchase in order to get a maximum machine?!

Very happy for your help!

Vacuum tubes is ‘da key to superior sound quality and to my knowledge Apple don’t do no vacuum tubes – so toss out the shuffle and hook yourself up with some good ol’ fashion vacuum booooobes. If you simply must resort to the far less superior electronic format and whish to use a CD or two, please google Jolida. If you really, really, really, want to suck some apple cock then at least go check out Roth audio – maybe you then can salvage some real audio quality out of those cheap ass Chinese made ipoo’s (no wonder iapple stock has had it’s up’s and downs (seems to have had quite a few downs as of late) when ipoo’s are made by folks making less in a week in china than it takes to buy a single ipoo in the real world, wad-da-yuu-expect?). Yea, like apple is really any different than all the other capitalist companies of the world – n0t.

f*** their workers, fark their consumers, they (ivips) say "let's lock them both down and keep the profits rollin’ N". The real funny bit is their consumers are so fanatical that they actually defend the capitalist pigs that run ‘da shou at A-p-le.

Don' t drink da' kool-aid (well at least not the stuff those ifarks are givin' away).

Then again if you care fark all for real quality (or the workers that make the product) then go right a-head and swallow - the world can always use a few more swallowers. Just, please, please, wipe your mouth when you finish - cause the world don't need any more dribblers.

I guess what I am really trying to say is what are you looking for?
Best sound? - has little to do with where the music is stored.
Most songs jammed into the cheapest space?
Easiest to use?
Cheapest over the long haul - including the up-front cost as well as the cost of the music?

What is most important to U? Price (upfront? long-term?) ? Memory? Capatability?

There's really just three types of iPod:

- the iPod shuffle (you've already met)
- the iPod nano (8GB-16GB of storage)
- the iPod classic (120GB)

[You can, alternatively, also look for the previous generation of the iPod Classic, which can give you 160GB capacity -- but the newer generation 'classic' has better sound, and a better user interface (IMO) ]

For your stated goal, I would suggest the iPod classic - 120GB should allow you to store a hell of a lot of your music.

ipods are very user friendly, but their sound quality sucks.

One company who have put their focus in what is important is Creative.

Take a look at the Creative Zen X-Fi players. May not be as snappy and user friendly, but they do sound good.

(rolls eyes)

They sound as good as what you encode on them - most people use 128 kBps encoding (the iTunes standard), which loses some of the dynamic range. Extending this to a setting of 192 kBps, 256 Kbps, or even 320kBps will yield as close to DVD quality as you can get without going lossless -- and then you can pick 'Apple Lossless' as an encoding format, and you get the pure 100% same quality as what your DVD yields -- with a significantly larger file size, of course.

Additionally, as I pointed out, the latest generation iPod uses a better ('richer', some people claim) decoding chip - finally, your best investmnet to improve sound quality is always to upgrade your headphones. Apple's headphones are decent, but spending and extra $50 to $100 on high quality headphones will make a huge difference.

Lastly, sound quality is entirely in the ear of the beholder.

Really depends on what is important - features that are most/least important. As erikE says for sound quality most of the various ipod models are near the bottom of the scale. If user friendly and apps are important then ipod is a decent option (that being said I have seen the most simple minded of TG's using most brands and a number of no-name brand mp3 players, if they can do it anyone can do it), if price is most important than ipod is certainly not the way to go (see link below for cheap, cheap, china no-name mp3/4 players), and if storage is most/very important that I would recommend a player that allows for the use of memory cards (miniSD disks or the like - again the one in the link allows for this).

Funny. So you do not know shit about this stuff, yet you still hold on to that Apple horse?

I will not even bother making arguments here (other than to say: digital data have to be made analogue, good or bad).

A general advice: Take the same source (mp3 file or whatever) and listen to it on different players. Then you will surely come to the conclusion that the ipods do suck in sound quality. They have other qualities, though.
