A general advice: Take the same source (mp3 file or whatever) and listen to it on different players.
I have - that is what my observation is based on -- note the comment about the more recent players having different different sound circuits, and the points about picking the encoding quality, and the type of headphones.

Will the exact same source sound different on different players? Of course it will -- hence, the reason for my last observation "Lastly, sound quality is entirely in the ear of the beholder."

Nevertheless, the quality will blur to being only insignificantly noticeable at very high (or, lossless) encoding rates, and using high-quality headphones.

Lastly, I would not use the MP3 format to make that comparison.

Ok, then I suggest you go see a doctor to get your ears checked.

Have you checked the latest generation of nano, touch and classic?

Several people with far better ears than mine have confirmed that sound quality has been improved.

Lastly, I will maintain - for consumers, listening under usual conditions, unless you provide variables for comparison, such as encoder (iTunes or some other third party), Kbps, and codec used, a comparison about 'sound quality' is as futile as chasing our own tail.

Sure, granted, if you are an audiophile and listening to your music in holy specialized listening rooms, then that changes the situation -- and you will never be satisfied from what any D/A conversion will yield.

The DAC used in recent iPod models is very good and certainly better than that used on most CD players except expensive ones.

For quality encoding, I use AAC 320 kbps and for those particular tracks I want near perfection, I use lossless AIFF encoding. The main issue with the iPod, as with any mp3 player actually, is that it doesn't have the power necessary to drive good quality headphones and that's where the sound quality really hurts. The solution, if that matters to you: use a headphone amplifier. But this, together with good quality headphones, will cost you more than the iPod itself.

Thanks a lot for useful advices from all. But this is really new to me: you can choose which kbps to use on the ipod Classic? That would certainly make a great enhancement I guess? I had a look at ITUnes and cant see that option anywhere. But maybe thats because I just have the small Shuffle?

And for sound quality: I read somewhere that when you get older (that is from 25 an up!) you loose the ability to hear the higher tones. Have no idea. BUT I know that my little beginner machine the Shuffle - with a purchase of better headphones, really amazes me with its sound! Sure an expert probably would not agree based on hightech arguements - but I will only use my player when in inside an airplane, sitting in office or taking a ride on my bike.

It seems I want an Ipod Classic and I will most likely buy one next week. Thanks again!

You set the Kbps settings up in iTunes, under the PREFERENCE settings:

Under the GENERAL tab, you will see a button called IMPORT SETTINGS

On the next screen you can set up the encoder to use (default is AAC Encoder, which is fine for what you seek.

Under SETTING, next in line, you can pick from presets for the Kbps, or by choosing CUSTOM set up your own. I prefer mine at 256Kbps.

That's it.

Any iPod will be able to handle the full gamut of all settings you set up under iTunes.

I have a iPod Touch myself. And in many ways it is a fantastic device. But in the audio department I will still claim Apple is inferior to say Creative.

And I have compared similar setups (like same high quality rips, great head sets).

But I will also claim that even the non-audiophile will hear the clear quality difference if you bother to check it out. The thing is, we do not know what is good until we hear it. This is a good thing in many areas, I clung on to my 28 inch TV for many years thinking it was big enough - until I saw my friend's 43 inch Pioneer plasma.

So what I say is two things:

1. If sound quality is high priority, do not go with Apple. There is no review in the world that support that choice.

2. Daffy, you write like you know a lot about these things. I would have kept quiet if I were you.

First generation, or current generation...?

Additionally, you say 'Creative' -- Creative is a company that makes a large number of products in their music player range -- which of the Creative units are you using as a reference point?

Lastly, I do.

First generation Touch. Or 10th generation ipod or something, or second to last generation ipod (yes, I know the rebuttal: "They finally cracked it with the very last version...").

I was comparing Apple (a company) to Creative (a company). The first one has their focus on design, second one on audio quality. Go listen to a player in the Zen x-fi-series and you would know.
