iPhone Dev Team has announced plans to release a software based unlock for the 3G iPhone on New Year's Eve.

http://blog.iphone-dev.org/

The unlock is available to iPhone 3Gs that have 2.11.07 baseband or earlier. Does anyone know what baseband new phones purchased now are likely to have?

The fabled unlock the dev team announced will be for iPhone software version 2.1 (which is baseband 2.11.07). The latest version 2.2 has an updated baseband (2.28.0) which patches the exploit the dev team used for their unlock - hence the restriction to firmware 2.1.

While this will certainly give you a more or less functional iPhone 3G with a software unlock, you will be excluded from upgrading to 2.2 and the security fixes, as well as additional functionality 2.2 brings with it -- as well as no future software updates, to bring more functionality.

The way I see, this unlock is more a way of saying "See, we can do it", than actually providing something with actual use (plus, as in the past, I assume the initial unlock will have a variety of problems).

If looking for a well functional iPhone, go for a first generation iPhone, either via eBay, or other used markets. It will work well for you.

Funny about the MacWorld 'news' -- I counted the minutes until the first "Steve Jobs is dying" rumors would hit. 11 minutes.

I feel people should be more concerned about MacWorld and IDG's health, than about Steve. Steve is fine - MacWorld is pretty much flatlining (and their participation in France's Apple Expo has been cancelled the same day - and Steve never keynoted that one).

Apple has been scaling back their trade show presences over the past several years, and honestly doesn't need MacWorld, a venue they do not control. They have WWDC in June, and various 'Apple Events' throughout the year -- where Steve does his mini keynotes, and will continue to do so.

I see Apple pulling out of MacWorld more as a collective 'f*** you' to the speculating media - essentially taking everything back to their own turf, under their own control, on their own timing.

Just like everything Apple does, the average 'analysts' have no clue as to what Apple's plans are, because they are farther reaching than they can imagine (which means Apple's plans go beyond the next day's lunch).

Personally, I think 2009 will be a fun year, and 2009 MacWorld will be a boring and lackluster show (at most, Mac mini updates, and new displays).

Actually the whole event is cancelled. Not a great loss anyway. Nor will be Macworld San Francisco's keynote disappearance. The only time I attended, I found the sound of those obnoxious cheering Apple fanboys absolutely unbearable. Jobs does not need that. WWDC seems to be better to that respect.

In other French news, Apple has been ordered to allow other carriers to sell the iphone, breaking Orange's exclusivity. This is a temporary order though. One does not joke with French competition laws (now that's a good one!!!)

iPhone 3G launches in Jordan, lacks Arabic support

The iPhone 3G has launched in Jordan, available exclusively from wireless carrier Orange, according to SaudiMac. The device is sold with a one-year contract commitment, with various pricing depending on the chosen plan. Customers looking for the lowest phone cost can choose the iDiamond 2000 package which includes 2GB of data usage and offers the 8GB model for 160JD (~$225USD) or the 16GB variant for 230JD (~$322USD). The phones currently lack full support for Arabic, while Jordan is not yet listed on the App Store country list.

Jordan is the second Arabic-speaking country to receive the iPhone 3G, following the November launch in Egypt.

The next location on the list is Qatar, although a formal release date has not yet been announced.

wasreading that the iphone is selling well below expectations in japan,

The reasons given were no digital TV reciever

No emoji,

No smart chip (so it can't double as a debit card / travel pass via a sensor swipe),

it's too big and the design is too conservative for japanese tastes

You can't block people from watching your phone (many japanese phones can only be viewed from straight on with a mosaic pattern showing at an angle)

Also no option to have business / personal from the same phone

Oh, please, Oh Master of Conspiracies, please explain how they are doing that? This has got to be fun...

I'm not sure if this has been covered earlier, but have a specific query on how to use an iPhone 3G software version 2.2, in Thailand.

I've ordered an iPhone 3G 8GB on a contract with 02 (UK carrier) on a special offer (they waived £99 purchased cost on the £35 monthly contract), quite excited to get hold of it. During the purchase I was repeatedly assured by the Sales staff that the phone would work abroad on a foreign sim card (not the internet access, but that doesn't bother me), however the FAQ in their website says differently. In the eventuality of the iPhone not accepting a Thai sim card, would it automatically brick itself, if an attempt is made?

If you have taken to Thailand an iPhone on contract (say UK O2 or US AT&T) :

1. have you used it with a Thai sim card?
2. did you experience any problems (brick itself or not working on a Thai sim card but working fine when re-inserting the original sim card) ?
3. which (if any) work around you used to make it work (with a Thai sim card) ?
4. any other info, advice?

No, it will not -- iPhone 3G will simply sit there, and not acquire a signal. It will remain usable.

Once you reinsert the original card, it will work as before.

You can try MBK, and see if they have any newer version of the SIM proxy work-arounds (a thin circuit that sits between the SIM and the iPhone, making it think it uses a genuine card) These were recently disabled by iPhone 2.2 software, but chances are new software patches for the proxy SIMs are available again. Should cost you around 500 Baht, I'd wager.

How do you like iPhone 3G so far?
