iPhone, Pre demand surges; BlackBerry tumbles

Demand for smartphones has reached an all-time high thanks to iPhones and the Palm Pre but is hurting the BlackBerry as a result, according to new data from ChangeWave.

A mid-June study from the research group has 14.4 percent of those tracked looking to buy some kind of smartphone within the next 90 days, a record high and a large jump from 11.2 percent in March. Of these, a full 44 percent now plan to buy an iPhone compared to 30 percent just three months earlier.
Palm has also seen its demand spike in the same timeframe. Interest in buying a Pre has exactly doubled from 4 percent of smartphone buyers to 8 percent even in the week after the launch, which would have satisfied some of that demand.

The surges for Apple and Palm appear to come directly at the expense of BlackBerry purchasing plans. Where hopes to buy BlackBerries were near an all-time high at 37 percent in March, they have since plummeted to 23 percent in June. Not all reasons are provided, but an increasing preference for touchscreens is considered a partial factor: the importance of these for users grew from 33 percent in September to 43 percent this month. Simultaneously, an insistence on a hardware QWERTY keyboard has remained flat at 33 percent.

A shift of the sort if it translates to actual purchases would signify a sharp reversal for RIM, which most expect will have a record or near-record number of phone shipments when it reports its quarterly results later today. The company has secured a number of important carrier additions in the spring that include AT&T's version of the BlackBerry Curve 8900. Its summer should also fare well with the launch of the BlackBerry Tour for most if not all major CDMA carriers in North America. [via Fortune]

In Thai fashion I expect to see higher prices for iPhone 3G to make up for lowered sales.

Analyst: BlackBerry may lose the "apps war"

Despite shipping 7.8 million BlackBerries and forecasting stronger sales, serious doubts exist about the BlackBerry's future, according to Needham analyst Charlie Wolf. Issuing a "hold" call on Research in Motion's stock, Wolf is concerned that the company's heavy dependence on home users for new subscribers -- 80 percent of the 3.8 million last quarter -- will leave it vulnerable to multiple new competitors, including the iPhone 3G S, the Palm Pre and multiple Android phones from HTC, Motorola, Samsung and others. He also worries that BlackBerry App World won't catch on and that greater choices with Apple's and Google's platforms will lead customers elsewhere.

"BlackBerry could be a loser in the upcoming smartphone apps war," Wolf says. "Software companies are increasingly focusing their development efforts on the iPhone and Android."

RIM was a late participant to the centralize app store field and launched BlackBerry App World only in April, months after Android Market and the iPhone's App Store became public. Recent estimates put App World's catalog at just under 1,100 titles while Android has 4,900 and the iPhone has about 50,000. RIM's policies also potentially discourage certain developers as it mandates that any paid app must carry a price of $2.99 or higher where both Apple and Google allow 99-cent and $1.99 downloads.

You are right - see my earlier message about " Thailand's True Move come out dispelling rumors of a reduction in price for its iPhones. "

China Unicom iPhone deal already complete?

A pact between Apple and cellular carrier China Unicom may already be sealed, according to Merrill Lynch analyst Cynthia Meng. "Our industry checks reveal that Unicom and Apple have most likely reached a deal for an exclusive 2-plus year agreement," reads a Meng note obtained by Reuters. "We expect iPhone products to be available in conjunction with the Unicom commercial scale 3G launch in Q4, starting on Oct 1." A Unicom spokeswoman insists that the two companies are still in talks, and has refused to comment further on Meng's claims.

Signs that a deal was nearing emerged earlier this month, when an unidentified Apple phone was approved by China's State Wireless Inspection Center. The country has also removed a ban on cellphone Wi-Fi, though companies must submit to the use of an official network security protocol. Apple's phone has also received a five-year clearance to use an assigned frequency range.

Apple has struggled to bring the iPhone to China, which represents a large potential market but one fraught with problems. Many Chinese are too poor to afford even a subsidized iPhone, and can already buy cheaper imitation devices. Networking problems have included not only the government Wi-Fi ban, but the lack of a 3G network supporting the global WCDMA standard. Carriers in the country have meanwhile objected to Apple's business model, which leaves no quarter for revenue sharing at the App Store, or pre-installation of custom apps.

Finally, Apple has gotten the software right with version 3.0. This is what it should have been all along, the way, I had envisioned the way the iPhone would have worked for me. There are practically all the languages I need for now. Even the Arabic alphabet displays correctly with characters joining properly.

A liver transplant, now?

I love AAPL. I think their products rule. And I think the company is as well-run as any in the United States. However, I think AAPL should have been more straight forward with their disclosure on Jobs health. Shareholders should be entitled to know if their CEO is having dramatic, life-saving surgery.

That being said, I wish Jobs the best. The direction in which he has steered AAPL has made that company one of the most admired on the planet. It's truly one of the most innovative, well-managed companies ever.

These things take a little while to mature, and Apple did it the right way.

Next year, some further incremental updates (faster UMTS/HSUPA speeds), better battery, etc...), and the year after, Apple's efforts in creating their own CPU and chips will bear fruits.

Mind you, the new CPU in the current iPhone 3GS has discrete RAM (i.e. as a separate component), unlike the prior generations, where the RAM was part of the CPU die - this means that Apple could, if needed, add to the operating system RAM.

The current 256MB are doing a great job, but if need be, 512MB would be even better -- and mind you, the ARM Cortex CPU is currently throttled to 600MHz, as it's capable of 800MHz. Plenty of room to grow...

OK; main point: what percentage of all facilities of the new iPhone do you use? I'd guess that the average tech savvy person will use < 20% of all things that the new iPhone offers - this includes apps down loads.
While you spend 5 paragraphs talking about the distant past, and working on long obsolete technologies, it's far more obvious that you have never used an iPhone. At all.

Oh, right, and *now* the going story is that Jobs had a liver transplant. What next? He's got a hangnail, and Microsoft bought Apple, or something equally stupid?

I guess it's been a while without the usual Steve Jobs Health FUD -- about time.

(Yawn)
