I'm looking to buy a new laptop and wonder if some of the more techy bro's could give some advice. I am a permanent resident in Thailand so all aftercare, service etc will be done here. The machine will be used for simple MS Office programs, Adobe Photoshop and a lot of internet browsing and downloading torrents. I have a 40,000 THB budget. I want a nice sized screen, 4GB of Ram and a speedy processor. Not keen on Asian brands like Acer, Asus etc. Not keen on Sony as it comes with so much Sony stuff pre-loaded which surely affects performance ? Thinking of HP, Samsung or Toshiba. Appreciate any tips, model suggestions, brand suggestions and even location to purchase, i'm wary of purchasing in Panthip as i've heard there's a lot of fakes around (yes, I do mean fake laptops !)

I would wait until Window 7 come out, as it is a much better OS than vista. As far as aftercare, I heard good feedback about fujitsu and Asus service center in bkk.

Get a Mac. You can get a decent MacBook or MacBook Pro for around that price, and years of troublefree performance. That's all I have to say about it.

Thanks Juniper, unfortunately the requirement is more urgent so I do need to purchase within the next 2 weeks. DD, Thanks, I considered the Mac route, but I have 2 colleagues with MacBooks who have had no end of problems requiring full reinstalls every 6 months or so, then there are compatability issues with the rest of the working world. I'll take another look at some specs and see whats about, but as yet i'm unconvinced.

First stick to the renominated shops in Pantip like Global Solutions. Secondly, realize pirated software for the PC is easier to get than similar programs for the Mac. For Photoshop to run comfortably you need a good doze of memory and a relatively fast processor. Don't think 40,000 will do for such requirement. It seems Fujitsu used to be a pretty popular brand in Bkk. However, they are not so common anymore.

Meaty MS Windows based 64 bit Vista or Win 7 with MS Office at least a Intel dual core 3 Ghz processor > 320 gig hard drive > more for movies and p2p torrents 4 gig ram... some have 6 gig for graphics but more $$$ good video card 512meg > nVidia higher res screen the bloat ware or extra software that comes with it, just uninstall them... use the free ware site out there... use MS Updater as well.... make yourself a systems disk per oem instructions when you get laptop too Ive used and owned HP, Toshiba, Asus, and Acer... all are/ were good never broke down.... keep the kids away from it, keep food and drink away, and don't drop it even hard handling in luggage backpack bag do its toll over time.... also hide it often when out, in the car trunk cause laptops are #1 in theft .... ask yourself about screen size 14" wide is great for packing around and 20k baht you can get good deals even at Lotus-Tesco, smaller net books and 13" wide screens are too small with multi windows open.... 15.5" ok for packing around great for screens but little more heavier.... 17"-19" tougher as for mobility..... if just in house or apt ok screeen sizes nice and big.... for max budget 40k baht you can get a nicer gaming based machine check out the manufactures websites.... get some simple specs down as mentioned above.... look at the plastic case some are too glossy and bright black or silver, look at screen resolution, how many usb ports, hdmi, serial, and cd dvd read writer...many are going Blue Ray HD for upper priced models now Bangkok has computer Expos, go and see if you can get good deals...its back to school season coming up and prices will be good... Toshiba and HP great brand names... ACER and ASUS big by volume but some can be cheap look and feel.... test drive em first ! pick em up for weight, multitask em... open up movies, net, music, documents to see if they bog down under a read write load Chok Dee ! PS use http://www.notebookreview.com it may help they load up the software task on them

Toshiba, HP, Asus are good. Toshiba will be more expensive. Stay away from Acer. When I looked around Fortune last year, 14" wide-screens were most prevalent. Don't get less than 4GB memory.

That's very unusual -- where the Macs configured for your colleagues by local 'talent'?

It's equally prevalent -- either at Pantip, or via regular online means (Rapidshare, etc..).
