Acer releases new tablet computer
=====================

New York - Acer is pushing a new series of devices in the booming market for tablet computers. The company will have to compete with the current giant in the field, Apple's iPad.

The Taiwanese manufacturer is offering three new tablet PCs as well as the Iconica, a tablet-style computer with two screens. Tablet devices are notable for their user interfaces, which focus on touch displays operated with fingers.

The first two of the new tablets are still lacking a name but are going to appear running Google's Android mobile operating system and featuring 7 and 10.1-inch screens, respectively. A third device, also slated to come with a 10.1-inch display, will run on Microsoft's Windows operating system.

All three devices feature WiFi and 3G internet access and can reproduce films and photos in HD quality. The 10-inch Android tablet also supports 3D games, while the 7-inch unit can be connected to your home network via the DLNA standard to serve as a multimedia hub.

Acer announced the Windows tablet for February 2011, while the Android devices will be available starting in April 2011.

The Iconica is a novel device that looks somewhat like a laptop, but possesses two displays. Input is made using a virtual keyboard on the front display. Both screens can also be used as displays, such as for reading ebooks or digital newspapers.

The "all point multitouch" function lets all 10 fingers be used for navigation. The backlit LCD displays measures 145 inches along the diagonal and offer 1366x768 pixel HD quality. The glass screen feature a special anti-scratch coating that also prevents fingerprints.

The Iconica weighs in at 2.8 kilogrammes, placing it well outside the lightweight class, and features an Intel Core i5 processor with an integrated graphics card. The Iconica is expected in spring 2011.//DPA

When I bought a netbook computer, the biggest factor was price and battery life. What good is it if the battery only lasts 2 hours?

So, after careful review (well, maybe not), of a few PC web sites etc., I determined a Samsung N310 was best battery bang for the buck.

I got one (refurbished) on http://www.amazon.com for $250.00 (USD).

Samsung netbooks are decently made, but have very little to do with a topic about *tablet* computers.

Are you getting the claimed 8 hours of battery life from it?

Microsoft plans new Windows operating system for mobile devices
====================================

San Francisco - Microsoft is working on a new Windows system for mobile devices like tablet computers, according to reports.

The system would focus on devices using energy-saving chips designed by the British company ARM. Many of ARM's chips are currently used in both the iPad and iPhone from Apple.

Now Windows will reportedly offer versions of its Windows CE and Windows Phone 7 systems that run on ARM chips. Its standard Desktop Windows system will be designed for x-86 architecture chips from Intel and AMD.

Microsoft head Steve Ballmer is expected to present the new systems in January at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. The new systems should support chips from both ARM, Intel and AMD. Quallcomm, Texas Instruments and Samsung all produce chips with ARM designs.

Microsoft competitor Apple currently dominates the tablet computer market, selling 7.5 million of its iPads between its debut in April and the end of September. Market researcher Strategy Analytics estimates that Apple currently holds 95 per cent of the tablet computer market.

However, tablet computers running Google's Android operating system are expected to eat into that lead in the near future.

An alliance with ARM could help Microsoft catch up in the mobile devices market. Microsoft official Achim Berg has noted that, since the introduction of its smartphone software, Windows Phone 7, 1.5 million Windows mobiles have been sold, meeting expectations.//DPA

Lenovo 'LePad' combines tablet and laptop
==========================

Chinese computer colossus Lenovo has unveiled an IdeaPad computer that serves as a laptop for work tasks then converts to a touch-screen tablet for play time.

The IdeaPad U1 hybrid, with a "LePad" slate that serves as a laptop screen but unplugs to become a tablet computer, made its debut on the cusp of the Thursday opening of the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

"It is one device to balance life and work," Lenovo product manager Leo Li told AFP.

"A keyboard is more important and Windows software more powerful for a lot of things you need to work, especially productivity and creating content," he continued. "At the same time, people want to enjoy music, see videos, go to websites, read e-books, and play games in their personal lives."

The LePad tablet is powered by Android software backed by California Internet giant Google and a Snapdragon chip from Qualcomm.

Once plugged into the keyboard base, the computer switches to Windows 7 operating software by Microsoft and a beefier Intel processor.

Lenovo is targeting consumers who embrace today's mobile lifestyle.

"Use the light-weight slate when you're mobile, and then simply slide it into the U1 base when you need to create and edit content," Lenovo Idea Product Group vice president Liu Jun said.

LePad has a 10.1-inch (26 centimeter) color screen, weighs less than two pounds (one kilogram) and connects to the Internet using 3G telecom service.

It has a front-facing camera for video chat and promises as many as eight hours of battery life.

IdeaPad U1 with LePad will be available in China by the end of March but won't be available in the United States until next-generation Android mobile software is available for use in the tablets.

IdeaPad U1 with LePad will be priced at 8,888 Chinese yuan (1,340 dollars) and the tablet will be sold separately for 3,499 Chinese yuan (528 dollars).

Report from Bangkok Post dated Tuesday 11 January 2011 :-

Take a tablet... or two or more - FIRST CAME THE IPAD, NOW IT SEEMS EVERYBODY'S RELEASING A SLATE DEVICE.
=================================

If you ask people to pick one of the hottest gadgets this year, the tablet computer would definitely be on their shortlist. Many IT companies are eyeing a share of this lucrative pie after Apple's iPad starting welling like hot cakes when it debuted last year.

We will see more and more people walking the streets carrying a smart phone, or reading the news on a tablet instead of flipping through the pages of a newspaper.

The iPad has propelled the tablet head first into the market. With its revolutionary multi-touch screen and ability to run thousands of applications, it continues to gain favour.

Goldman Sachs predicts that iPad sales could top 37.2 million units in 2011 and technology research firm Gartner forecasts total tablet computer sales of 55 million units this year.

Nevertheless, price and software are also factors for the mainstream market. The good news is that choices are wider for consumers today. Challenging the monopoly of the iPad, dozens of other tablets are scheduled to be launched over the coming months, in a variety of sizes, from seven to 12 inches, and with alternative platforms and prices.

There are some running Microsoft's Windows 7 and webOS, but users who prefer an open platform have chosen Google's Android operating system, from which they can gain quick access to thousands of downloadable applications.

At least 40 new tablets were announced at the Computer Electronics Show (CES 2011) from brands including Samsung, LG, Acer, Asus, Motorola, HTC, Sharp and Toshiba. Hewlett-Packard and Dell have already released tablet devices.

The BlackBerry PlayBook from RIM is due for release in the first quarter and is expected to be launched in Thailand soon after. Looking at the specs, it could offer the biggest challenge to the iPad.

Samsung, the first iPad rival, introduced the Android Galaxy Tab in Thailand last year and the company said it will maintain the model as its star this year. Priced 22,900 baht, the seven-inch touch-screen Tab is nimble and packed with features. AsusTek Computer plans to release the E-Pad, a 10-inch device running on Windows 7 and Android here in March.

If you love a two-in-one device, perhaps Lenovo's IdeaPad U1 Hybrid device, which combines LePad, a 10-inch Android-powered tablet with a Windows-powered base station, is right up your street.

This year will also see local brand Android-based tablets hitting the market, notably the Wellcom A800 and i-Note from Samart i-Mobile, priced at 15,900 baht and 13,900 baht respectively. The latter is the lowest-priced device so far.

Thanachart Numnonda, director of Software Park Thailand, believes that price will not be the factor restricting the growth of tablet, rather it will be broadband availability and the price of a 3G connection.

The touch-screen device is best for reading rather than typing. The good thing about tablets is that it's easy to access applications. Components and usability features of the tablet meet consumers' needs.

Tablets do not really compete with personal computers, but they have caused the sales of PCs to drop.

"The tablet is the right answer for consumers today in dealing with the internet, email and reading newspapers," Thanachart said. He believes that, in the long term, magazine and publishing services will earn customer loyalty by creating content for the new devices.

Still yawning -- actually, no even bothering anymore.

Nice graveyard of wannabe tablets over the next year, I have no doubt.

Hey, QQ, did you know some losers around these parts, and elsewhere, are convinced that you are an alias that I post under? Quite funny.

Apple profits soar

Apple Inc. chief Steve Jobs stepped aside on a high note as the company he saved from ruin raked in a blockbuster $6-billion profit amid unrelenting demand for iPhones and iPads.

A day after Jobs announced he was taking an indefinite leave of absence for medical reasons, Apple reported its record net profit as revenue soared to an unprecedented $26.74 billion in the quarter ending December 31.

The Cupertino, California-based company said it sold 7.33 million iPad tablet computers and 16.24 million iPhones.

"We had a phenomenal holiday quarter with record Mac, iPhone and iPad sales," Jobs said in a statement accompanying the earnings report.... More
