I didn't get asked to pay in advance at all.
The Mamasan in very politically correct terms said to me that if I wanted the girl to "make me feel good" during the massage I could talk with her and make an arrangement depending on my "wants".
So that is the way it went, I asked the girl how much, she said 1,500 baht and I paid the girl directly after the event, not before.
I am not sure why you are always asked for an up-front payment.
When I visit next, if I am recognised as a repeating customer and a customer that wants FS I might then be asked for up-front payment perhaps.

My first time I had to pay upfront. The second time not... clearly I am not the english teacher/backpacker on a tiny budget - not sure why I've been asked to pay upfront. Perhaps because the mamasan isn't normally there when I go... dunno - but I think by now I've been there enough times that I'll just say no.

I was a bit concerned about this pre-event charging and so in the interests of research I visited the said Dream Heaven yesterday.
If I chose a straight massage from the menu, I was being expected to pay up front. I don't mind that. You go to a fare-ground and want a ride, you pay first before climbing in. And I know that none of that money goes to the lady anyway.
But I chose the ball massage option and was quoted 1,500 baht to which I said that I can get that at a massage parlour just ten yards away for 250 baht as an extra.
The response was that I should take the lady after paying for the straight massage and negotiate with her upstairs as to what extras I wanted.
This I happily did.

I think you must be writing of Hi-So High-End places, because the places I go to, every girl wants to earn as much as she can.
However, even in the places that I frequent, though girls don't mind getting their hands 'dirty' for a mild balls massage and the usually inevitable hand-job, maybe at times they might display a reluctance to enter into negotiations with some individuals for other more specialized services.......possibly because they feel that if they did with these certain few, they would not retain a sense of control.
Another possible reason for this pre-massage payment might be because of the fact that this group of parlours in particular were some years ago suffering from a small group of so-called tailors and gem-stone workers timing their visits to be the last of the day, having their massage and f*** and then making a run for it without paying for anything when most people had already gone home.
I don't know if the idiots have tried that one on again recently. The very thought of it make me want to beat the living shit out of these low-life cheating 'businessmen'.
It may be that the prepayment is not insisted upon, but only there if the girl and the receptionist feel a little uncertain about a guy and then, if so, demand the money first, unsure as to whether they have encountered him before or not.
Some 'clever' westerners tried that on at SoL some years ago, having their drinks and being sucked but because they didn't cum by the time they had finished their drinks, would walk out only paying for the beer. Needless to say, they were readily banned. Also it used to take place during the day, because at night there are more than enough Thai guys to appear in an instant to ease their wallets open.
To me, people who earn a good buck outside of Thailand and then come over here to abuse girls and steal from them, are the scum of the earth. Enough said.

Photos on website and photos in the shop books.... OMG, the retouching is getting more and more ridiculous. The girls RARELY look even close to the over-retouched photos. They might as well use cartoon drawings.
