My family had a safe in Thailand with around 500k of gold inside and a further 1m baht in jewelry.... thieves unscrewed it from the mount, then used a massive crowbar to force open the door; I think but cannot recall exactly the brand name.
You may be safer in an apartment; however some pointers (we consider it to be most likely an inside job) :
- get it installed, and get the screw heads ground off and resined as well; otherwise they can just mark in a new screw head if you just grind the swrew head flat only
- don't get the same people who sold you the safe to also install it as they will know which key and also where
- check the guarantee of protection several times; somehow the safe manufacturer was able to avoid payment in our case
- if you don't trust the people who sold to you, do the installation work yourself; probably install in a cupboard or something; you want to be screwing into concrete or something; I suggest you do some research on this, because as is pointed out earlier, if they take the safe they will have all the time in the world to open it. anything under about 200kg is easy pickings; they can come and pick up your aircon unit or some other red herring with a trolley and your safe will be missing when you get back... of course this reeks of an inside job and that is how the thieves get you.....
- you don't want anyone to know you have the safe.... otherwise they know you have something worth stealing; especially ladies and so on from NEP etc. That's why wardrobe or similar makes sense

yep, if someone wants to get it open they can; the key is that if they can move it, then they will need to get it in a position to open it which could be tough if it is resined and bolted into the floor/wall in a hard to reach place.
The safe really will only help you against a basic thief, for an inside job (such as the person selling you the safe) then they know what each safe takes to open, and it really isn't as much as one might think.
Since none of the jewelry was insured, I guess it was a good lesson - luckily I was too young to have any thing in it at the time!!
