Don't get me wrong. I love going to the movies in Thailand - for me, they have excellent facilities and the prices just can't be beat.

But there's one thing that really intrigues / annoys me and I can't understand why it happens.

I love the fact that we can choose our seats at the ticket office - simply point to the light blue boxes and away you go. Given that we have that option, why oh why oh why do people choose to sit clumped together when there are often dozens if not hundreds of empty seats in the theatre.

If I let the tirac choose the seats, you can be sure she will choose seats right in the middle of where everyone else is. If I choose, I will go to a quiet area surrounded by empty seats, but usually find that when I sit down, other people (usually thais) have decided that they would rather sit near me than have a row of seats to themselves.

TGF said it's because thais don't like to be alone, but that seems too simplistic to me.

Has anyone else noticed this?

Perhaps many cinema goers have the same idea when it comes to deciding which seating area is the best one in the auditorium. Personally I usually go for an isle seat in one of the middle rows.

Cheers
PS: Gota agree on the good value of the cinemas in Thailand compared to other countries but latecomers shouldn't be allowed in after the movie starts.

Simplistic, but true. It’s a socio-psychological scientific fact. This is not the forum to elaborate on stuff like this, bit it is embedded in their culture in such a sense that it subconsciously manifests itself in day-to-day things like choosing seats in a cinema.

Another example. Have you ever seen Chinese people in a restaurant in a group less then 4? Going for lunch/dinner alone is unthinkable in China (and most other Asian cultures.)

I love having a quiet dinner with my favorite diving-magazine, but chances are rare “they” will let me.

One of the funniest things I have ever seen in Thailand took pplace at RCA cinema.

Thai guy with his girlfriend.

Just asa the movie starts, his phone rings.

He talked for 20 minutes, irritated everyone in the theatre, not excessively load, but enough to be a pain. When he finished, he said to the girlfriend, "I can't follow this" (neither could she I don't think having had that irritating turd next to her)

He stood up, grabbed her hand and dragged her out.

Whadda twat.

thai chinese??

scobie, noticed that as well. they like to sit in the middle.

that will give me plenty of space on the sides. since I pay for the cinema, I usually decide where to sit.

I am not sure if this is a typical Thai thing. Whenever I go to the cinema in my country the same applies. The best seats to most people are at the back, in the middle, so you don't have to look up to see the movie. Most people want to sit there, regardless of how crowded it may be there.

Let me give one example.

A couple of weeks ago I went to see a move with TGF. Having noticed this trend before, I try to pick seats that will lessen the chance of it happening.

When I buy my tickets, it's about 50% full, with lots of spaces in the first 5-6 rows.

I chose two seats that are reasonably well located but have one space free on either side of us. I figure that makes it impossible for a couple to sit next to us. I like to stretch out.

Now get this...there are still dozens of very well placed central seats in several rows. But what happens? A single guy arrives late, struggles past knees and cokes and popcorn and plonks himself down right next to me. WTF? There were numerous better seats in other rows (not forward rows either) where he could have sat without getting the way of my f****g elbows. When he bought his ticket, he must have consciously decided he wanted to squeeze in with others. TIT.

The real point of the post? How the hell am I gonna get a blow job in the movies, if people insist on sitting so close together?

I went last night to the new "'robert deniro " film HIDE AND SEEK......we alternate between a thai movie weekly and a farang movie.......I have to say the experience is as always 25 people in our 3 last row seats 10 and 11...area infront behind and open spaces around....Thais are instinctively afraid of ghosts, and darkness alone.....in her village I reached cult status almost for walking the road past the fields under a beautiful moon alone....several people recently died in or around the fields, and many think their ghosts are there. But all have reasonable explanations (for deaths) Ie the last guy dropped dead in the field.....it was 40 degrees and he often complained of head aches. (time bomb) One guy drowned in the weir....but hey his hip flask of meekong was empty on the bank. One fell of a bike mysteriously on a straight road.....and so on. In total 6 or 7 in under a year....ofcourse then someone claims to have seen a ghost on that road. I have to admit I walked about two kilometers out of the village, and while drinking a well chilled heinkein from the portable ice bucket I took, on this moonlite night. Something strange did happen. The air in a section I walked into was noticably cooler and the bugs went silent. I had to remind myself that their is a scientific explanation for it, racking my brain for one I concluded that the slight dip in the road, near by water, and wind direction (albeit light) funnelled cooler air, and the bugs in that area had moved to the humid air. The walk back was alittle faster, as my mind began to entertain spooks. Out on a feared renouned thai spook road, you allow such games to begin after that experience. Ofcourse I was told the cold air meant they were around me (the ghosts) and the bugs couldnt be heard. Indeed they may have pocessed me! So I was made to sleep in a seperate bedroom, while she locked her door closed...thats thai! As for the spook movie we saw...I wont ruin it....But it gave cheap charlie a funny twist...deniro as always made it creditable..great twist at end......yea they aint gonna sit alone they want to be surrounded..remember they are mostly village people at heart also.

I'm surprised you go to the movies, DG. Haven't you heard that there are syringes filled with AIDS contaminated blood sticking out of the seats in cinemas these days?
Wow, you are so brave.

You want to be alone?
Try the midnight showing at Emporium on a Saturday. I have been at this time twice in the last six weeks & each time we were on our own..literally! Two people with the cinema to ourselves.
Do you know how many seats there are in this cinema?.I do now!!

"He talked for 20 minutes, irritated everyone in the theatre, not excessively loud, but enough to be a pain."

This happened to me a few weeks back with what looked like rich young Thais (18 yrs old or so). They arrived late sat next to me and then started with the typical juvenile behaviour..no respect for anyone else in the audience. Phone goes off & the guy answers. I expect him to hang up but it is clear that he has no intention of doing so. So, I lean across my TG & tell him to shut the phone down. The guy is a little shocked but does as I say. Five seconds later his mate two seats further down receives (I assume) the same phone call... At this point I admit defeat ( I don't think my TG was too impressed with me admonishing the guy in public) & it was clear that the young thais, after the initial shock, did not give two f***s about the falang..typical of arrogant youths the world over, I suppose.
