Good topic.
I've got no arguement with the earlier posts but I would like to add that on a certain very few occasions I like to wear "comfortable" clothes which may appear as "scruffy" to some folk or give the impression of mutton dressed as lamb but WTF. Also I like to go unshaven for a day or two just to let my face relax a bit from the daily scrape!
Personally I don't feel the need each day to wear smart casual togs when I'm on holiday. Also, as I wear a suit each day at work (and shower n' shave every mornin' !) it makes me feel quite relaxed on holiday to wear shorts that may have seen better days and I may choose to not have had a shower that morning but there again I wouldn't necessarily "dress" like this when I'm going out to trawl the bars of NEP, well not every time!
What concerns me more is the complete arsehole who walks around carrying a a bottle of beer swilling it on the street and marching into the bars without feeling the need to buy a drink, and these folk are not always drunk at the time either! This is much more of a bad advert' for us tourists and Farangs in general. None of the Bros act like this, do you?

All interesting points. My OP wasn't aimed at tourists - it was instead thinking about long-term residents. Does being here a long time dilute the self-critical, self-assessment faculty in us? Does hearing we are handsome day in and day out, somehow lead us into believing we no longer have to try?
Do we stop making an effort? No doubt some of the scruffy herberts we see would be the same lowlife back in farangland as they are here. But I'm sure some of them have just 'let things go'.

I like to drink, smoke (cigs) and f*** not necessarily in that order.
When I'm at home with my 16 y/o daughter, I don't drink or smoke. Dad has to set the example and I don't miss it, nor do I mind not doing it but when I come to LOS by myself on vacation. I go hog wild, I'm up to a pack a day. No problem drinking 10 or so beers or whiskey in a day. I seriously doubt if my liver or lungs would be able to withstand me living over here.

I am retired and still look and dress in clothing that, while it is not in the latest style, is at the very least clean and without holes.
I see some ratty looking people around Pattaya but my circle of friends consists primarily of permanent residents who have established homes and families in Thailand.
I think it has more to do with your upbringing and your circle of friends than anything else. Thailand has little to do with it other than there is a little more tolerance for that sort of behaviour here than elsewhere.

Totally agree with the last point. It has to do with your upbringing. I have been here for a few years now. I dress pretty much the same as I would on a hot summery day in the UK, and I wasnt considered scruffy then...casual I guess you could call it. In my field of work I dont have to dress smart...casual too.
I certainly dont believe any of the girls and their 'hansum man' talk and the' you look young' lines. The only thing thats different is the amount showers that I take...

I stayed in LOS for 4 years and felt the same way about how I dressed then (at weekends etc.) as when I'm on vacation now. It wasn't really me not makin' an effort is was more like just wantin' a break from the suit, tie n' sensible shoes.
I think one has to be a total fool (literally) to believe the BGs and I don't think that the majority of people's "slide" is down to a lack of prodding from friends, family, wives etc. Could be but... Hmmm, it might be more to do with them feeling like me (now and then) and the others are just born scruffs and probably dress like that as normal!
