Assuming that the problem indeed was incompetence rather than a language barrier...you have to remember that Thailand is still very much a developing place and these type of quirks are to be expected. This is the good old trade-off that you have accepted when you decided to move there. You have to take the dog with the fleas. The obvious alternative is to relocate to a place like Singapore where general service is above-par. Otherwise, I am afraid you'd have to bite the bullet.

P.S. I am not well-acquainted with Hypershade's other posts, but IMO his original post did not have any chauvinistic overtones. In fact, this should be mandatory reading for anyone who is too enthusiastic about moving to Thailand and whose vision has been totally shrouded by the dancing go-go girls to make sure they have an idea of how things work out there.

Come on, pal, don't get anal over these little nuances. Whether antibiotics cure a cold or not is somewhat beside the point. Hypershade's main beef was the fact that the general level of professional competence in LOS could use a little improvement which is not far from the truth. Not everything is rosy out there and first-hand accounts of expats living there might be helpful to those wishing to relocate.

I lived in PI, the doctors I saw never perscribed antibiotics to me or a 'common cold'...
Oh I see, you went to the 100 peso doctor in Greenhills Mall yes????
Seriously, In PI there are several serious respiratory infections that you can get that require the use of antibiotics; but as you indicated that was done at the advice of a trained and qualified physician.
If you walk up to a pharmacy anywhere in the world, and ask a pharmacist what you should take for a common cold, I guarentee you will get cough syrup and cold pills.
The only exception I have come across is PI where the pharmacist, if asked for a antibiotic, will give you Amoxicillan because they really do not care and PI has no restrictions on the sale of perscribed or controlled drugs.
BTW: If you really can not stand the quality of service you are getting here.. Stay Home!
