I dress well when in hotels, resturants or meeting friends.
But in the country.
Or walking pattaya beach
I wear sensible clothing.

I walked off the street looking like that and bought two brand new motor bikes.
One for her one for me.
Cash.
Then got dropped at chang rai airport dressed in $200 leather shoes, an italian designer shirt (she got me) and country road $175 trousers.
Sure the treatment improves.
Might get robbed even easier.
Look your point about letting it slide.
I do shave, shower 3 time daily, change clothes once.
Yet I fit the bare chested yobo on pattayas beach jogging of beer gut.
I aint poor though.
Its alittle bitchy to start pointing and talking (on a mens forum) how poorly some look.

I ride motor bikes in the country in just shorts.
I recognize the need to attire in certain places.
Pattaya beach board walk on a hundred degree day isnt one of them.
Theres an aussie two villagers away that looks like cast away, but owns 500 rai of farmed land houses all over thailand, and 2 expensive cars.

scobie, it's all about individuals - some people have no self-respect, others do.
I mean, look at it this way -- if left to your own devices, with no external 'check', would you just let yourself go in the same manner, or do you, all on your own, try to keep clean, wear a nice comfortable shirt, and generally care about your appearance? I think we're both in agreement that it's highly unlikely to see you running away in such a like manner as that guy...
On the other hand, I think it has nothing to do about these sort of guys looking in the mirror with a "Loooooooking good, man!" leer, but rather of them (fueled by incessant consumption of beer), not giving a care about their personal appearance. I do believe that a low social standing, coupled with consumption of large quantities of beer contribute to such an attitude (they seem to go hand-in-hand).
But in the end, it's all about individuals, and how they relate to themselves.

I dont wear shirts unless I have to, ie reason social.
Judging piss heads on nanna or soi cowboy,
or pattaya beach..is just catty.
But to extend the premise that ones average or below par appearnce reflects level of self conscious or alcohol consumption, is a faulty conclusion to such premises.
As I mentioned in the country the few farangs I have met replace their garb for comfortable clothing.
I can sit (as I have to tommorrow on a plane with family to bangkok ) in modern well groomed mode, and drink coffee.
Or ride a motor bike in the countryside in shorts drinking chang beer, til the cows come home literally.
To judge others on their dress prefernce or make absolute assertions on That bases is (sterotyping aside) just a little gay isnt it?

Fair enough, and I may have judged a bit harshly (or described the situation a bit too generalized) - I guess it falls under the "You'll know it when you see it" kinda situation.
This isn't about taking your shirt off, or running around in comfortable clothing - I wasn't implying that one MUST wear designer clothes in order to show self-respect.
On the other hand, I don't quite see you presenting yourself in the outfit describe previously, in the middle of Bangkok, in public - correct me if I'm wrong, but on one hand, you hardly sport a gargantuan gut hanging out, and I hardly see you as wearing nothing bicycling shorts if you were.
I do stand by my assertion that such behavior shows a significant lack of self-respect - both letting oneself 'go' to such a level, and then not caring enough about personal appearance to subject your *host country* to something you wouldn't do in your *home country*.
On second thought, let me simply shorten it that such behavior shows a significant lack of respect - both for one-self, but certainly for the country and culture one is a *guest* of.

I don't believe that anyone is talking about or being critical of running around shirtless in the appropriate locale (like, in country, as you pointed out, where others do the same).
I was under the impression that the discussion was about inappropriate such dress, such as the aforementioned biking short look.
