Well put, Joe. In fact one guy I knew well who thought he had such a good connect at Immigration: friend of a friend, yeah: he let it go on for a couple years, insane: he later got pinned by another bigwig cop at the Departure on a trip home to the family after a disaster back there in England. Terrible way to leave in those circumstances, and yes, he had to pay the 20K and was so shook up about the heat they gave him there that he hasn't ventured back here to Thailand yet. Fancy that. Very well, as J Wood points out, it's in the computer and even if someone changes the log, matching that and your missing messed up stamps can give rise to investigations of a hostile nature someday, sometime. 6yrs back or so, nobody's caring much it seemed, but now, this is enforcement all over.

Many years ago, I overstayed by 69 days. I merely went to the airport, paid the maximum at the time (10,000 as I recall), got my passport stamped and left. As I understand, the maximum is now 20,000, unless he is caught before he is at the airport. If he is caught elsewhere, he will go to the monkey house, spend some time there and probably get one of those nice PNG stamps placed in his passport. My advice is to forget his contacts, sneak to the airport and pay the piper. The good thing about this approach is he won't have to stand in those long lines to get his passport stamped. He can walk directly to the overstay desk and take care of business.

Yes, I'm afraid it looks that way. He was here when it was still permissible (tolerated or overlooked, read: still on someone's take-home) to get those stamps via an illicit service in town. It was trying to patch things up with the fake stamps that got him into contact with the connection which he thought would save his neck, but didn't. ... However, Expatchuck's method outlined above seems most time-saving for those guys who love to cut corners. Yuns should all overstay a few days to avoid the crowds. Good thinking, EPC. Eventually this ought to thin out the stinking crowds always clogging up Sukumvit as well.

my last trip through airport I noticed brisk buisness at the overstay desk, the guy & girl working both had big smiles, they appeared more than happy to take in the money, each transaction only took a minute or two

Once you overstayed, how do they store and match your data? Do they save your name and birthdate? That would hardly be sufficient for identification. It would be easy to get a new, fresh passport at home - with no stamps in it and a different number. So how does Thai immigration know once you show up again that its blacklisted Mr. Evilfarang?

Ningning: Merely overstaying is not a problem. You may go and return on the same passport without worry. I have overstayed a few days many times and have never had a problem when I returned, even after the 69 day adventure described earlier. The only problem you might have is if you are arrested for overstaying and then deported by Immigration. They will likely put your name on the black list and you will have problems re-entering, at least on the same passport. I have an old friend that had a problem with a weapons charge. He was finally deported and marked PNG. He returned home, got a new passport with a minor name change and still comes regularly to LOS. The minor name change was something like: from....Billy Bob Jones to.......William Robert Jones (Disclaimer: The above example has no reference to any person living or dead and should not be presumed to be outing anybody. My apologies to all the Billy Bob Jones' in the world.)
