My advice:
1) go to the police and fill a complaint ;
2) find a good lawyer and sue the other guy.
It takes long time, so don't forget to ask also more money for your other expenses (time lost, lawyer and court fees...). You probably won't get all the money that you will ask, but it is worth trying.

OK..perhaps I owe DrLove an apology nitnoi. I came into the office today and the immigration / work permit specialists tell me I can't get my work permit until next Tuesday, largely because I dont officially start work here until 10 November and you can't apply for a work permit more than 15 days in advance of commencing employment.
I hope this is helpful to other newbies.
But my guys here tell me that my papers are all in order and that it will take no more than a 2 hour trip to the one stop work permit centre (whatever that is) to get my permit on Tuesday afternoon.
So.. my apologies, DrLove.
manowar.... sorry mate, but I'm not a lawyer. I'm a lowly marketing director, so I'm not qualified to give legal advice. I'll defer to the Bankgok experts on this, but I would have thought the tourist police would be a good starting point.
Given the amounts of money involved, it's not worth you talking to my firm. Our hourly charge out rates for our top people in Bkk are around 16,000 baht an hour!

I see you've kept yourself to the deal (even if we didn't have one  ). You have received my return PM already.
The one stop center is on Ratchadapasidek Road. Near to Poseidon. I'ts for companies that are either BOI approved or have a registered capital of more than 35 million. I got my work permit there.
It's unique as it has a immigration office and a work permit department on the same floor.
You first get your month visa from the immigration department and then your work permit. After that, you have to visit them a couple of times to renew your visa.
If I remember well, you get 1 month first, then another 5 months, then upto a year.
Of course, I am wrong sometimes, but after 20 years in LOS, I know the score by now.... 
Right on, Abrak, not worth the trouble (THB 9,000 baht). If it is a registered company, you might lodge a complaint with the TAT.
