Thanks EPC, this is exactly what I meant. I wonder whether it is necessary to even minor change the name since a new passport will go along with a new passport no. My initial question was which criteria are saved when you pass immigration: Since there is no unique identifier in terms of passport no. or biometric data, there must be a combination of name and birthdate and / or something else. How do they make sure that a person blacklisted does not enter the country again?

Here is how the story unfolded for my friend. in Oct 2008! we spent 20.000 THB overstay fine to immigration in Khorat. Made special arrangement for him that with the 20k THB he gets a 7day Visa thus no longer being an illegal in the country. Then Visa run to Laos to special contact gave hime a 2 months Visa. Ran an inquiry which papers needed for Non-B Visa in Laos and after that sent him with complete paperwork to Laos to a special contact I met meanwhile. (I run 2 companies, so could issue employment papers for him.) Now he holds a Non-B Visa and will get 2 yrs. work permit on 30.02.2008. Sometimes the 'sit-and-wait' tactics really work! Sure, the only problem is that you get caught while 'sitting and waiting' the consequences can be real disastrous... Just 20,000 baht won't solve your problems then.

I second that 100% Dr. L My buddy did not want to fly back home! I was telling him exactly the same and advised him flying back and applying from home would be best! So the risk he ran was his. I was trying to find a solution all the time, but is was not until I happened to meet the Visa run guy in Laos and the chief of Khorat immigration until I could get him out of trouble... shark68

I recently overstayed by 1 day. I had 500Baht at the ready should I be fined I approached the customs booth at the airport & was told 1 day extra was okay - no fine applicable

I have done that a couple of times too, you get a one day grace period, but only at the airport, if I am not mistaken.

Agree on that BK, my visa date was 22MAR, I left on the 23rd, the guy at the counter called over his supervisor, he asked me if I knew I overstayed. I told him Immigration had told me that I could leave the day after the date stamped because it isn't a "full day". He stamped my passport and I was on my way.

Yes, but weirdly Thai airway has some of its flights leaving at 0.05 AM, so you are screwed and have to pay for 2 days even if you overstay only one Thailand.... Madfrog

Correct, there is a one day grace period at the airports, but not at the land borders.

I would think that as long as you go through immigration before midnight you would still be on the "grace period" day.
