...and make sure they won't come back?
In the last year I have killed 12 rats that I have actually seen dead, and at least double, possibly triple that amount using poison, standard Tom & Jerry type rat traps and also the glue traps.
Our house is only 3 years old and the rats are getting into our ceiling on the ground floor. I called Rentokil and the Thai chappy came around and quoted us 20k to lay poison all over the place. I told him I could and have done this myself.
What I need is someone to come and clear out the rats, clean up their shit, check all of the electric wires and such that have no doubt been chewed over the last 2 years and then seal up any access way so that rats don't return.
Does anyone have or know of anyone that has experience in these matters in Thailand??

... it's Jack simple... get a cat.

... we always kept a couple of working cats on the farm where I was raised, and they are masters at rodent control... some cats will have better hunter instincts than others, but their primary instincts are to snooze, breed, hunt, kill and then snooze again (lots of snoozing)... the mere scent of cat piss raises in rats a primordial fear and instinct to flee.

... don't get hung up on a pedigree anything, as they are so over-bred that they are genetically inferior to their feral cousins... pure breds become unhealthy and their instincts are bred out of them (they get stoopid)... if the cat is a male, do not neuter him and do not have him declawed... let him out at night... allow them the tools to be the aggressive hunters they are... they will know what to do from there.

... some of our cats would bring back the night's kill and leave it on the porch for us to 'oooh' and 'ahhh' and admire... we guessed it was either showing off how bad it was, and how lucky we are to have such a magnificent beast, or it was sharing the kill with it's adopted pride.

... I am not a cat person, but have watched enough domestic cats killing prey to be thankful they are no bigger than they are... don't let that sissy-assed purring and rubbing on your leg deceive you... were domestic cats as big as a medium-size dog, all dogs and small children would be at risk... they've all the wild instincts of their full-sized African cousins... they're just a bit more 'fuzzy-wuzzy'.

... your rat problem is now halfway solved... the rat crap and wiring and insulation and such is another thing... but, first get a cat.

... incidentally... steel wool is the best material for plugging accessways into a house to prevent rats from entering... rats will gnaw through anything, but they cannot handle steel wool.

... and... just because the rats vacate your home, doesn't mean they've vacated the area... maybe they just moved next door... you might look about the neighborhood for where they are nesting... look for refuse piles, abandoned homes, nearby food businesses, etc.

... good luck.

(... "you can take the boy out of the country, but you can't take the country out of the boy"... man, I always wondered if I'd ever find a use for this incredibly valuable experience... anyone out there having problems with their tractor hitch?)

In Texas we do not use standard rat poison but we use a form the dehydrades them and causes them to bleed out. The cool thing about it is that after eating it they go hunting for water and they end up dying out in some field instead of the walls of your house.

I can't help you with your Thai Rat problem though.... the only rats I have seen in Thailand are those sucking beers at the go-go bars

... right, China Sailor, but be sure that you leave no source of water inside or around the house, as the rats will die close-by... stinky.

... these poisons are pretty potent, and even their carcasses can be toxic... if you've pets or kids, or kids in the neighborhood, think carefully about how you disperse this stuff.

Finest kind mags....

In my case it is my stroage garage in Austin out by the airport. I keep my car there when I am out of town and one time during a long-term project in the UK rats got in and chewed up my vacuum lines and a wiring harness.

I use packets that contain the poison, the rats chew into the packets instead of the car and hence are poisoned.... kids and small animals usually ignore the packets.

I hate cats -
But on a farm where grain bags are stored and 5000 kilograms of farmers rice in reserve (for tough times) were kept-

I noticed her family had breed fine quality cats - all 7 of them-

It was explained only the best off spring over 10 years were kept til the gene pool was developed at the level that these creatures were a real team.

I watched a mouse run out and how these cats worked to cut off all escape.

Grain that was taken meant death for a member of this team- they made sure it never happened-

One would sit on each corner of the stack or rice sacks-

Two perched for an over view-(even higher)

And a couple on the ground (usually the fastest and youngest)

occansionally a sucide bomber mouse would run into the mix - while 5 mice sweeped around to hit the rice stacks-

none made it out alive-

Cats is the solution-

And please remember the key-

Dont feed them often-

And on a kill pour cream and fresh small fish-

Make it clear a kill means rewards-

Keep them so hungry they want to eat the little f***ers~!

Or get some small dogs, Jack Russell or small terrier types. They go for rats too I think. We used to have a little mongrel (now dead, road accident, Thai drivers!) and he was great at catching rats - great big ones.

We use the dehydrate poison and yes it does get them out of the house to die. Problem is, we have one enormous rat in the ceiling that is either immune to the poison, or won't take the bait. It just keeps thumping about upstairs. Perhaps it ain't a rat?
A cat is the last resort. I would rather get someone in to clear 'em out and seal up any access.

We had pigeons banging around in or ceiling for a long time.... you are probably correct and is is some other animal and not a rat.

The solution is to hire a laborer to go into the crawl space and hunt it down.... at the same time patch the hole the critter got in through ...
