THE results of this travel survey seem to stand what some Singaporeans believe on its head. According to respondents, the third-best fine-dining experience to be had in all the world is in the Lion City (after France and Italy). It is also one of the top five nightlife destinations.

And apparently, the Republic's malls are surpassed only by those of the United States and the United Arab Emirates.

But, ask how good this island metropolis is to do business in, and Singapore's top placing in the prestigious World Bank 2007 rankings goes out the window — it stands in seventh place as an ideal venue and ninth place for ease of doing business in, according to the Country Brand Index (CBI).

The Republic also fell three notches in its "safety" ranking to 10th place this year.

The survey was conducted by FutureBrand, the same international consultant that helped the Singapore Tourism Board position the Uniquely Singapore campaign.

Singapore overtakes Hong Kong for expat costs

SINGAPORE has overtaken Hong Kong to become the third costliest economy in Asia for expatriates' daily needs because of its strengthening currency, human resource firm ECA International said on Wednesday.
It said the Singapore dollar, which has surged by more than 10 per cent against the greenback, pushed the city-state to third place above Hong Kong, with Japan and South Korea remaining the two most expensive countries.
ECA International carries out a survey twice a year by measuring a basket of common items purchased by expatriates in more than 400 locations globally, such as dairy produce, vegetables, clothing and meals out.
The survey does not include housing, utilities, car and school expenses as these items can make a significant difference to costs but, the firm says, are often compensated for separately in expatriate packages.
'While we are seeing price increases in a number of Asian locations, the main reason for Singapore's rise in our ranking over the past 12 months is the strength of the currency,' says Lee Quane, the firm's regional director.
He said allowances paid to protect the purchasing power of employees on long-term assignment in Singapore are now higher than those paid to international executives posted in many other financial centres.

Question about Singapore -- a girl I "know" has been keeping me up to date on what's going on in her life over the past few years. Due to some unfortunate decisions (buying a big car, and building a new house for her parents), and the not so ideal economic situation, money is a very important part of her life, sadly (I'm not sending her any, though), and she has now gotten to the point where she hates her job.
The last conversation was that she is considering going to Singapore for 6 months, to make big money - or so she was told.
What's the realistic situation in that regard, and what are the possible risks to her?

DD> if she's going with fellow working gals that she knows then she should be okay, if she's going alone via a tout or what not then I would help her decide not to go.
I know a group of gals that go every 6 weeks for a month, they make buckets and then stupidly hit pattaya and blow it all on piss, clubs and male prostitutes....crazy bitches but it makes them happy in their own way.
On the flip side the BKK Post ran an article maybe a year or so ago about Thai woman being held in the woods and forced to f*** on a straw mat out there with nothing but a tarpaulin wall and roof, they reported on there being 100's of girls in this wood being used like this, customers were immigrant workers, paying between 5-10 USD a pop.
Hence my original advice above.

Singaporeans, on the whole, hold Thais in complete contempt. Good for nothing but manual labor and whoring. If she can stomach that, there's money to be made, but she needs to be ready for the way she will be viewed here.
