I'm from Australia and thought Singapore was pretty sweet. But I had friends there and we hit up the nightclubs...went to OT out of inquisitiveness.

If you know the right people the city is great. I'd love to move there but seems to be a lack of job opportunities atm?

What's your occupation?

Not a lack of job opprotunties, just a cutback on hiring foreigners.... if you are a PR or Citizen there are a lot of opportunties in Banking/Finance, IT, Biotech, and Logistics.

However if you want to come on a workpass you pretty much have to be transferred here by an established MNC...

If you have a "good" degree in one of the sort after areas (as CS mentioned) its still straight forward to get work in Singapore. There is always room for good people, no matter what the papers say!

I believe they have just stopped or drastically changed the 1 Year "looking for work" Pass that gave well skilled foreigners a chance to live in Singapore up to a year with a pretty much guaranteed Employment Pass when you got a suitable job. Pity, it was a good scheme.

Report from ChannelNewsAsia dated 13 March 2012 :-

Hotel rooms in S'pore the most expensive in Asia
====================================

Hotel rooms in Singapore are the most expensive in Asia, according to the latest Hotel Price Index by Hotel.com.

This despite a two per cent fall in average hotel room rates in the region.

The latest index placed Singapore sixth among traditionally expensive countries like Switzerland, Italy, Denmark and France.

Average room prices for hotels in Singapore came in at S$239 last year, a two per cent drop compared to 2010.

Singapore was also ranked the second most expensive city for five-star hotels in the world.

London hosted the most expensive five-star rooms at S$537, just S$43 ahead of Singapore which came in at S$494.

Johan Svanstrom, managing director (Asia Pacific) of Hotels.com, said: "The hotel industry in Singapore has developed tremendously in recent years. For one, the hotel room inventory has really grown with numerous openings of prestigious hotels targeted at affluent, business travellers.

"On top of being a business hub and a stopover for long-haul travellers, the country has also invested in upscale attractions such as the integrated resorts that have proved to be a great hit with tourists - these make Singapore the perfect vacation option for luxury travel."

Hotel room rates in some of Singaporeans' favourite destinations saw significant price falls.

This, coupled with the relative strength of the Sing dollar, meant it is cheaper for Singaporeans to stay in hotels in many Asian destinations.

For instance, Japan's hotel room rates fell seven per cent after the earthquake in March 2011, while Thailand's room rates dipped due the recent floods.

On the back-end of a sluggish economy, Vietnam joined six Asian nations boasting the lowest prices in the report, alongside Cambodia, Thailand, Taiwan, Philippines and Malaysia.

For Chinese cities such as Shenzhen and Shanghai, room prices saw further reductions due to greater competition from new developments and on-going currency fluctuations.

The hotel price index tracks the real prices paid per hotel room for about 149,000 properties in more than 19,800 locations in over 85 countries.

report from The Straits Times (Singapore) dated 9 October 2012 :-

Singapore is rich expats' top place to live and work: Survey
============================================

Singapore has emerged as the top place for wealthy expatriates to live and work in, a new survey by HSBC Bank has shown.

Expats in the survey ranked Singapore first out of 30 countries based on economic factors such as earning power, disposable income and ability to accumulate luxuries.

Thailand was in the second spot, followed by Cayman Islands in third place. About 44 per cent of respondents said they saw a 50 per cent or more increase in their disposable income after they relocated to Singapore, the report said.

The report, which surveyed more than 5,000 expats in 100 countries, also said that 54 per cent of expats here earned more than US$200,000 (S$246,000) a year. They also ranked Singapore highly for its quality of life, placing the Republic fourth overall, especially for its safe environment in which to bring up children.

I did a double take on that last bit : ranking Singapore high for its "quality of life" and "environment in which to bring up children.."

Having done this, yes the environment in Singapore for raising Children is very good, safe, good but expensive schools & easy access to rest of Asia.

agreed...especially since for the past decade or more, Singapore has had a serious problem PRODUCING children, leading to all sorts of gov't propaganda campaigns aimed at getting Singaporeans to a) get married and b) actually f***...

the educated women of Singapore (as women of all societies are apt to do when confronted with the lazy, dismal inaction of men) have thus of course taken it upon themselves to find husbands/baby daddies outside of the citizenry, haha...one of my students did her Master's thesis on this topic (and she's from Singapore)...
