Just to bring an old post about Shanghai back to life:
I've lived in Shanghai for the last 6 years and there are several places to find women. But first a few warnings.
There are a few general groups of women in Shanghai.
a) the ones who are just out to have a good time, maybe available for a dance, but nothing more
b) the ones who will come over to you and flirt until you end up buying them a drink, then you are stuck with buying them drinks all night and won't get anything but their company for the night (until you go home --alone-- of course)
c) the ones who will ask if you will buy them a drink...you give them a 100 RMb note... they go to the "bar" and then u never see them again...girls make a lot of money this way... go to 5 different bars in a night and there's 500 easy RMB for them and 5 pissed of "lao wai" = farang.
d) the girls who are looking for rich husbands. They will cling on for dear life if they know u have money and they will treat you like a king....be warned, this is all materialistic you will never get real love from these girls.
e) the working girls, these will usually approach you if they are free lancers... usually found on bar streets such as Zhu Lu Lu, Mao Ming Nan Lu and those places. The later in the night, the older and cheaper the girls get... onyl the real dragons are available after 1 am. But there are some real beauties around earlier, just flirt lighty and buy them a drink and then if you feel in a hurry to get some action, bargain for a price and what services you want. Often they will hang outside of the bars and ask as you walk out "yao qu wan ma?" (want to go play?)
finally f) the girls who work for mamasan/papasans... generally as a rule of thumb i would steer clear of these. the papa/mamasans take a huge portion of what you pay the girls and if you are gonna get in trouble with the police, this is the easiest way to do it. Don't trust these people. These can be normally found in such places as the Galaxy Hotel (used to be a great disco but died down since the manager was shot for drug trafficing)
Oh there's one other type of girl. the one's in the KTV bars... You walk in, select a girl, and they will join you for as long as you are at the KTV bar and i think you can take them home, not sure on that one. never experienced it so i cant comment much.
Anyway if there are any questions about Shanghai, i know a fair bit about the nightlife here.
yes speaking chinese is a huge advantage in this place but for those of you who can't... most of the freelancers speak pretty good english nowadays and can communicate very easily.. One problem i have found while speaking chinese to them is that they be-friend meand that kinda bars out anything outside of the "friends" margin 
so yeah i just wrote this coz i was bored. Hope i helped some of you out.
(If you feel that anything i have said is wrong, unclear or total bull shit then let me know your opinion on the matter and i'll try to clarify)

Just to clarify the best places to go for freelancers or the odd freebie (not working girls.. just girls interested in a few few drinks and being with a foreigner (((very rare...must speak chinese..and being young helps)))
Mao Ming nan Lu
----manhatten bar (on the left hand side comin from huai hai lu
----Judie's Too -down a bit and opposite of Manhatten
----Buddha Bar - right next to Judies too and up the little stair case
Zhu Lu Lu
----Just walk down this road and enter any bar you find interesting, this street is filled with girls, most available at a price, some are not.... do not ask a non-working girl how much it would cost for ST or LT prostitution is not looked highly upon here. You will be able to tell which ones are working by the way they respond to you from the very first greeting.
Also i have posted before, in many of the lower class hotels you will recieve a phone call about 8-9 pm and it will be some mamasan askign if u want a lady.. bargain with these people! you will get them very cheap, especially if you speak chinese... just keep saying "Yi Bai Kuai" = 100 RMB = 400 baht dont pay more than this in one of these places...
yet another note (yeah i know i am boring) do not attempt to take a girl back to a higher class hotel. anything 4 stars or above, or anything frequented by foreigners will not allow you to bring a girl into the lobby, leave alone your room!

Another place to go is Xin Tien Di (an outdoor mall, very famous)
Go to Paulina or Dong Mei (sorry, forgot the English name but it is right next to Starbuks, easy to find).

Was in Jiangxi Province in November. Most 3/4 star Hotels had MP on one of the floors. I and my Chinese GF would go to MP pick a girl and have her sent to the room. Or GF would go pick one out for me/her. Alot of the girls would not want to be with a westerner.

LT from 500 to 800 yuan ($60/$100USD). ST 300 to 400 yuan ($35/$50USD). In Juijiang quality very good 8/9. Had my best lay ever in Juijiang. Had a girl that had pussy muscles like vise grip.
