Siem Reap is not known for a vivacious nightlife - the town owes its place on the map primarily to the majestic Angkor temples, the only legacy of the Angkor empire. This is not to say that there is a dearth of lewd activities once the sun sets and crowds start leaving the temples en masse.
Before I touch down on what I did while there, a quick +/- evaluation of the scene in Siem Reap.
On the + side...
---> Cheap
---> No safety issues, e.g. in terms of being robbed, etc. (in stark contrast to Phnom Penh from what I was told)
On the - side...
---> Cambodia has one of the highest HIV rates in the world (30% of working girls)
---> Khmer women, while attractive, do not place as much importance on hygiene as their Thai counterparts
---> Unless you take the girl to your (presumably nice) hotel, the premises where the dirty deeds are done are sleazy and dingy - and that's putting it nicely.
I've checked out several places while there. There is the (in) famous Zanzibar, which is basically a pick-up joint. The place is run by an amicable Belgian guy (quite a character) and all the girls are freelancers. Although the owner will tell you that he has nothing to do with the girls, the fact of the matter is that they are all regulars which provides some kind of insurance; if the girl robs you and you come back the next day and tell the Belgian chap, the girl would be banned from Zanzibar. At the same time, no bar fines as, again, they are all freelancers. I ended up taking a girl out. She spoke no English and we negotiated through another working girl. I didn't want to take her back to my hotel so I was promised short-time accomodation for $3 (all figures in US dollars). As we left, we were driven by the tuk-tuk driver who said the accomodation is $5 for an hour, $7 for two hours. I tried to explain that I was promised $3 accomodation, but he just shook his head. Lesson learned - negotiate with the driver in advance, not a co-worker in a bar. Anyway, I took the 1-hour option. The hallway was very dark and I kept on wondering if I'd ever come out alive.
The shag itself was mediocre and the girl smelled a bit. From my (very limited!) experience, Khmer girls don't tend to go the extra mile to please like the Thai ones - they just lie there and stay at the ceiling. The room looked very dingy - wouldn't want to repeat the experience. As we finished, I just wanted to get the hell out of there. I paid the girl $20 we agreed on and sent her off. [$20 seems to be the standard price - both for short-time and long-time, they don't seem to differentiate between the two.] The tuk-tuk driver who brought us there was nowhere to be seen (I was to pay him $2 for getting us from town and back) - I figure because I selected the 1-hour option he decided to come back in an hour while I was done in 20 minutes or so, so I just walked off to my hotel which, incidentally, was fairly close. That's $2 saved, so in the end I did end up paying $3 for accomodation! At this risk of being labeled a Cheap Charlie, it's not about the money, but about being ripped off. I don't like paying more than fair value or higher than what was agreed on. I like certainty.
Bottom line - Zanzibar is a nice place for a drink and should you feel so inclined, a half-decent shag.
Martinis - this is one of the most popular discos in the city. I've arrived around 8:30PM to check it out. There were about 15 people - 14 waiters and yours truly. No other punter in sight, girl or boy, foreign or local. Drinks are expensive, at $3/bottle. Depressive Khmer pop blasting. Irritating lighting. Not for me. I have asked the staff when the crowd starts to gather and they said around 10-11PM. Forget it. I went back to my hotel.
Massage - there places are everywhere in Siem Reap, but I don't think they have the Bangkok-style soapies. I checked out a place close to my hotel. There was a crowd of Japanese tourists so I decided to pop in. Same fishbowl as in Bangkok establishments, with the girls and the numbers attached. Some of the girls looked disturbingly young (15-16, but I might have been over-cautious). I was quoted $30 for a massage and a boom-boom, but offered $20 which was accepted, and settled on a pretty girl who looked okay age-wise. What to say? The room was disgusting. There was a huge cockroach slowly making his way across the pillow. The massage nothing to write home about, although that came as no surprise. The shag was also average - she was just lying there with her eyes closed. After the f***, I was directed to take a 'shower' which was a good source of amusement for me - you have to see it to believe it. I think I went in cleaner than I came out. Yuck, yuck. I tipped the girl 2,000 riels ($0.50) and set off.
Conclusion - sex is easy and cheap here, but you've got to be really sex-starved. I mean, REALLY sex-starved. Too much sleaze and Thai women beat Khmers hands down. Stick to the temples and save your money for Bangkok.

The standard is 5 $ I think we paid all the time. Most Vietnam girls and like you said they do not do much extra and the aptnam thing is not used.

I don't know about the Zanzibar being a nice place for a drink - the red piano is a nice place and an Irish bar that was going up last September looked like it will be nice.
But, the Zanzibar is the place to pick up girls and at $1 for draft beers it's hard to beat. There were only about 10 girls there when I went and 4 were 8s, not bad! Took one back to my hotel the Reaksmey Chanreas, 2 doors up the street for $20 ST.
Also saw a group of German girls stop in out of curiosity, but they eventually figured out what the place was and left.

Not a bad FR Golden Star, sounds like you stayed only a couple of days up there.
I would only go up there to see the temples,but I would bring my own girl from Phnom Penh,hearing the same thing about the place.
Did you get down to Phnom Penh ? If you did let us know what you thought of the place.
I`m back to Phnom Penh on the 11 June for visit number 8

I've only stayed there for 4 days and didn't have a chance to go to Phnom Penh. Maybe next time.
Zanzibar really doesn't have too many girls, but the quality isn't bad at all. And yes...the booze is cheap!

Ahh...I had my first trip to Cambodia (Siem Reap and Phnom Phen) last month. The people there were so friendly I felt like I had found the true land of smiles. The cambodians warmth, charm and eagerness to please frankly put a lot of Thais to shame. The girls I met and had p4p with in Cambodia were more than just a short time or long time experience they were really good friends to me. I have a lot of respect for Cambodia and cannot wait until my next visit. As for siem reap, you dont have to go to zanzibar or martinis to find a nice girl to spend time with, just sit in a bar or restaraunt and you will no doubt find a really good friend too. As for the Cambodian girls not being as good looking as Thai women, I cant disagree more. They may not be as well dressed, or as fashionable as Thai ladies but I can honestly say that their bodies and faces, equal, if not better many Thai ladies I have met. I have never met girls so eager and 'genuinely' interested to find out about me and share experiences with. Cleanliness, I agree is not top of agenda in many areas of Cambodia but things are changing and hopefully influx of more tourists may change this.

I also made my first trip to Cambodia last month traveling to Siem Reap and Phnom Phen for six days. My experiences with the girls were similar to power24. The girls were very clean, eager to please, almost all spoke English, and the horizontal action was fine. In all cases had better GFE than in Thailand. Sanuk came very easily, even with nonworking girls. Cambodia is what Thailand was maybe 20/30 years ago.
I stayed at the Mandalay almost next to the Zanzibar didn't think much of the bar and the FL in and around it. I liked the Red Piano a block away food/drinks/staff very good.
I had a great experience in Cambodia and will be spending more time there in the future.
My feeling is Golden Star is too instruction manual orientated, paranoid, cannot let go/relax and simply enjoy the experince. GS once you learn to loosen up a little, you'll have a better experience. I enjoyed your candid posts. Keep them coming. Well come to the board.

While your assessment of my personality is fairly accurate and I do happen to have an anal retentive personality, I maintain that I have enjoyed my experiences in Thailand far more than those of Cambodia. While three shags do not make me an expert on SR nightlife - far from it - I do not see how "loosening up" will make me feel differently about things like standards of hygiene or the Khmer vs. Thai attractiveness.
