So I am hearing all these tidbits on the forums about alcohol sales being banned at restaurants and bars between 2PM - 6PM. ÝNo one I know in BKK has heard anything about this, yet I have read a few items mentioning this and noticed Trink said that it was true as well (not that Trink is particularly tuned in anymore, but it did appear in his column). For those people who are actually in Thailand at this time, is this restriction actually being enforced outside of Patpong? ÝI mean, can one seriously not get a shot or drink with an early dinner or late lunch? ÝWhat about pool halls opened during the day? ÝCan they not serve alcohol at places like the Londoner, Gullivers and Hard Rock Cafe, etc, etc between 2-6PM. I've no doubt one could get around this. ÝMy question is, are the Thai authorities actually trying to enforce such a silly rule? ÝAnd if so, is this aimed at farang dominated areas or is this some offshoot of the social order campaign. The notion that a person can't order a beer in the afternoon at a bar or restaurant sounds almost too ridiculous to be true.... ÝSadly, with APEC approaching and the current Thai government in power it would not completely surprise me.

DrLove - "Stop moaning ..... Wake up after six" It is not a question of moaning. ÝI tend to wake up early and go out during the afternoon, so restrictions on early afternoon drinking would effect me. ÝBesides, it is the principle of the thing that would irritate me most. ÝI will be in BKK early next year regardless, so I will have to deal with whatever restrictions are in place next year anyway. ÝBut with some vacation time to burn coming up, and a few green travellers in tow, I would probably chose a different holiday destination for the lot of us if the Thai's were seriously going to hassle people about ordering a beer in the afternoon. ÝIf these restrictions were only in the bigger entertainment venues it probably wouldn't phase me, but if it were a country wide thing, I would just go somewhere else till I absolutely had to be back in BKK. Getting back to Thailand is not my priority in life. ÝIt is a great destination, but enforcement of infantile regulations do not deserve to be rewarded with my holiday spending. Ý Ý

I don't know about the Biergarden, but in most places you can get Beer or any other alcoholic beverage at any time of the day. Have not noticed or heard anything at all. Even the thai countryplaces in shoppingmalls serve Bier and Whisky from as early as they open, and malls are usually the first to comply with rules. IMO you want get thirsty, no need to change vacationplan.

From Trink last Friday: 'The gendarmes have dusted off and are enforcing a three-decade-old law; niteries and eateries can't serve alcohol between 2-6pm. Any comment would be superfluous' Niteries and eateries .... that would exclude some places at least, is it?

"Niteries and eateries .... that would exclude some places at least, is it?" Seems pretty inclusive to me. ÝNiteries and eateries equate to restaurants and bars in my book. It seems pretty clear this is being enforced in Patpong. ÝWhat remains to be seen is whether it will be enforced elsewhere and whether these restrictions will be dropped after APEC. So far I've read no credible reports of these sorts of regulations being enforced anywhere other than Patpong.
