I'm not going to tell you how you should have behaved (like a lot people here) because I know I most probably would have lost my cool if put in the same situation.
But, why would you give something valuable to you to a hooker? she's going to wear it on her head (which probably isn't very clean with the Smoke in the bar) and might conveniently forget it is not hers....
Next time, better to keep your valuables away from the vultures

I suppose we have all had our moments of losing our cool and apparently a hat was the trigger this time. But I think you were very lucky that they did not have the MIB show up. IMO, you will always be in the wrong even when you are totally in the right.
BT 200 to the mamasan (Cherry) would have gotten it back pronto with alot of good feeling to boot.

We all lose our cool from time to time, and I don't particularly mean to criticise thaiaficionado for doing so. I've lost it myself a couple of times with the more unpleasant girls and mamasans that we come across on the bars.
The issue is that thaiaficionado seemed to think he hadn't done anything wrong, and that physically pushing the mamasan and bouncers around was an acceptable solution.
Yes, he got away with it this time, but next time things could turn very nasty indeed.
PS. I would never seriously call myself a "bad boy". Judgemental westerners do. The persona is laughably ironic, but since it seems to have stuck, I've embraced it. Anyway, back to the whoring...

I was wrong to blow my stack, and I sincerely hope the bouncers weren't fired. But extorting money through the theft of personal belongings is an unacceptable way to treat a paying customer. I went through too much to acquire that hat to give it up without a fight, yet wouldn't have paid the thief a single baht for it's return.
I hope that makes sense.

I don't know why everyone gets the impression the MIB are so bad. I've had a couple of dealings with them over the years, and it's always come out in my favor, and these weren't the tourist police.
I think all these rumors of how bad they are, are just started so you won't call them, then mamasan loses if you do.

Like I said, maybe I missed something, but it seems you gave the hat to a gogo girl, who then took it home (either because she forgot to return it, or she thought it was a gift, or she wanted to steal it). You raised merry hell, physically attacked the (entirely innocent) mamasan and door staff, at which point the hat "thief"'s friend returned it. You didn't mention anyone asking for any cash...
@Koolbreez: My only dealings with the MIB have been playing pool with them for money (when they were on duty, natch). I played to lose, since they had more guns than me. Amazing Thailand.

From reading the description of events, I presume this took place downstairs. If I am not mistaken Cherry (Cheryl) is the upstairs mamasan. She might have appreciated the tip, but probably couldn't have done much to help.
