Actually it was on February 11 (according to signs posted in several Cowboy bars). A 3-month grace period sounds reasonable, but somewhere I read that the 22,000 baht fines for smoking kick in seriously on June 1. Not sure about that, but my recent visit to Patpong, where smoking illegally is still prevalent, has me hoping that June 1 will be the great day when all indoor air will be breathable.
Never mind that today, May 31, is "World No Tobacco Day". This being TIT, I would expect that the last refuges for smokers will "celebrate" this day by encouraging smokers to light up one last time, before the Thai law finally kicks in.

Narrow Escape
Skytrain, on my way home. What the hey, I'll make a brief stop at the Nana station, over to the Soi 7 Bier Garten to take a recce of what's on offer at the 9 o'clock evening hour. One lime (why they call it "lemon" I DON'T know) juice as a nightcap, and I'll be on my way.
Place is crowded, no "real" room at the main bar, only a couple of "Foodland lunch-counter" spots. 65%/45% F/M, but that's relative. In my brief walk-around, nothing jumped out (well, a few did, but for the WRONG reasons).
Home it is. Just as I reached the entrance, departing, here comes a FL I know, arriving. She's a sweet girl, fun to talk with. She always remembers me, and the conversations we've had. Attractive, but just not enough to MY lower self, even though I know she'd give a real GFE. She reminds me of a Dubai Seaview PRC - they could be cousins, fun to talk with, just never got around to "knowing". Don't quite know why that is, why some you take, and some attractive ones, just not attractive enough, even with a great personality (and that's not the 'she has a great personality' slight).
She asks where I'm headed. "Home." She grabs my arm, "Don't believe." "No, really, no seats inside." True and true statements. But she's having none of it. Fine, I will have my nightcap, and buy her a drink. [Note: now I've briefly forgotten that this is not the same as in a bar: there, a lady drink EARNS her money; here, a drink is just a drink. But it will give her something in front of her while she looks for a customer.]
Lo and Behold, we spot 2 adjacent seats at the main bar. We sit, I order a lime juice, so does she. She leans close, and whispers, "I'm a little bit drunk."
"Danger Will Robinson" alarms start to go off - almost 2 DECADES later, I still remember my first bg regular, a mean drunk, and I do mean MEAN. Frighting; several times I'd put her in a taxi, hand the driver a couple 100 baht, and tell him to take her wherever she wanted to go. Now, Miss Friend is PROBABLY not like that, but I AM familiar with drunk bg logic... And it's not a pretty sight.
Drinks come, and I IMMEDIATELY start on mine. No need to delay here. She looks around, and comes to a similar "ratio" conclusion as I had, but from HER point of view: "too many ladies, too few man; not good for business." I continue to drink.
"Last night, you take lady, not take me..." Yep, I DON'T like the way this is headed, could turn into "Nasty (and not the good nasty) Street" anytime. I drink faster. "You take lady, only give me small money..."
Guess the old cliche IS true: no good deed goes unpunished. Previous night, before I'd really gotten started talking to Miss Pull, Miss Friend had taken a seat on the other side of her. I bought Miss Pull a drink as we discussed "things", and I considered buying Miss Friend a round, but I knew it would just be a drink. Besides, I wanted to finish the requirements spec, quickly sign the contract, and be on my way to implementation. Deal made, but got a slight sting from Miss Pull on departure. On her arrival, she'd ordered a beer. Now, on our departure, besides the drink I'd specifically bought her, she was having the waiter put the beer on my tab too. Not enough for me to say anything, not wanting to dampen the financial ardor I'd just purchased, but still... Just a little splinter... And Miss Friend CERTAINLY understood what had happened.
Feeling a touch guilty with respect to Miss Friend, I'd slipped her a 100 as I walked past. Would pay for her drink, or she could use for taxi money. Up to her, but it was hard cash.
I could feel the turn onto Nasty Street coming up... Now, I'm gulping the lime juice, bitterness be damned. Suddenly, a detour. "I only joking..." Whooo. But then, it's the intoxicated logic that I dread, that narrow focus... "Today, several men buy me drinks: 4 wines, some beer, 2 whiskeys, but no business." OK, if I'd drunk that mix, I'd be puking my guts out in the gutter (low alcohol tolerance). Her, it's just "focused" her reasoning facilities... "No business. I no have money..."
OK, there NEVER was an 11Bravo BG charity fund, contrary to some beliefs. Certainly a drink for some I enjoy, and I've purchased many a bg's company, but it's always been cash and carry (or should that be 'carry and cash'?) No installment plans for future "considerations"
I say, "Oh, look, my drink's finished. Have to go; bye." "Where you go? You take lady! [THAT is not a question, but a statement.] You not take me."

"No, I go home. Now." Yes, those are encircling tentacles. I break free, both figuratively, and literally (the confined bar stool space). I see an opening, and lunge towards it. Open space never looked so good. Her "no customers" observation follows me...
I'm sure the next time I see her, she'll be her old, sunny self, but, lesson learned, I will confine my Bier Garten drinking to earlier in the day.
Narrow escape indeed.

Oh, probably, compared to some, but I've had a few experiences...
And with the collapse of the dollar, let's not be too hasty to dismiss the cost of a few drinks  Where are those 59/$ days... Hell, I think we're approaching the 25/$ pegged days...
But the point of THIS story was really as a coda to the Rose bar post.
And I'm not a newbie to know that a drunk bg is someone I DO want to avoid, that's EXPERIENCE speaking... hard learned...

During the demonstration:
Sunday, skytrain only running as far as Soi Asoke, so got off there. Decided I'd walk down to Bier Garten, SLOWLY. Not that much traffic, either auto and foot, on Sukhumvit. Quiet.
Bier Garten pretty sparse at 2pm, but there was one that attracted my attention. Attracted, but didn't catch; cute face, couldn't tell about the rack, so wasn't compelling enough TODAY. But the face was certainly attractive.
Figured I'd give it an hour, then... Annie's was closest, and there were several there on my to-do list. On the other hand, the Soi 24-26 cluster: Mango, Snow White, maybe Sazanka, or maybe try one of the others in Washington square. And there was always Tulip 1 stop up...
About 3pm, decided to leave Annie's for another day, and head to the Soi 24-26 Cluster. Just then, an attractive girl walked in and sat down directly behind a pillar (of course) so totally lost sight of her. Waited a bit to see if she'd move around; of course, she didn't.
So the mountain would have to go to mo... Paid my bill, and took the LONG way out. As I passed, got a nice smile, so stopped to chat. Nice rack (bit of sag so knew legit), older but far from dragon material; that was just what I was looking for today.  Some nice, easy marketing, nothing pushy, which I appreciated. Leaned in close, checked the menu, all in order, 2 shots, pay after (OK, so KL was still casting its shadow on me...) 
I mentioned we'd go to the Penthouse Hotel, but she preferred the Playboy - said it was cleaner, bigger room. Fine by me. What was a surprise is she asked if I wanted to walk - damn, I might need to check this girl's passport, make sure she's Thai.  Also gave the option of a motorbike taxi (figured that was an implied *2, but you never know), but I stayed with the taxi option - I'd leave the exertions for later. Walked over to Soi 9 via the Park's parking lot, didn't have long to wait for a taxi.
Several differences between the Penthouse and the Playboy:- Penthouse rooms are underground, in the basement. So as soon as the taxi pulls in, you are hidden from the street.
- Playboy's rooms are ground level, so you are not hidden from the street.
- Penthouse basement rooms can have poor/no cell phone signal.
- Playboy rooms get a signal.
When we got to the Playboy, we stood around waiting for the attendant. Unlike the Penthouse, standing around is in plain view of the street. Eventually she gave up, and asked at the front desk. Just about then, here comes Mr. Attendant on his bike. Same price as Penthouse: 310 baht for 2 hours.
Rooms at the Playboy seem a little "fresher", that just because they're ground level, so when opened up, they will get some fresh air rather than exhaust. "Our" room had a round bed (I couldn't care less), wall mirrors (though the Penthouse had more mirrors, closer, so maybe the rooms are smaller  ). One thing that the Playboy had that the Penthouse didn't was a sex chair. She could lay in it, and you could comfortably stand while probing her attributes.
Bathrooms similar, though the Playboy gives you 2 bars of "hotel-small" soap. Penthouse had an obvious flash water heater, Playboy didn't, but the water was hot enough.
Nice shower before retiring to the round bed (my heart was all a-flutter, but that wasn't due to the shape of the bed - her shape very pleasing). Services delivered, no problem, standard package: DFK, bbbj cim, DATY, FS, with a short massage before, and another short massage between rounds.
The only real problem was the combination of my UNDERestimation of myself and her appeal, along with her professionalism. One of the attractions she had mentioned at the BG7 was that 2, even 3 hours would not be a problem, giving me whatever time was needed to recharge the batteries, as it were. Damn, the truth hurts. The SHAME of it was, not the case. She was appealing enough that the specified 2 shots were away downrange before even 90 minutes were up. I was thinking there might even be the chance for that elusive third, but having fulfilled the given contract, she was showered and starting to dress, asking me what time I'd be departing the room... 
Writing on that wall clear... She made no bones about it, she wanted to return to the BG7, look for another score before heading home. Not worth it to beg, so just got dressed myself. But certainly if there ever is a next time, I'm being the optimist and asking for 3 up front  .
I walked over to the Morning Night bar on Soi 4, the one just before Nana Plaza. Saw a couple of attractions there. Granted, not as many as the BG7, it is a much smaller bar, but still, might be worth a look. No real stunners, but a couple who certainly were easy on the eye, friendly, with some good marketing. Unfortunately, by now I was deaf, and I'm not taking about my ears...

that's just because there ARE no lemons in SEast Asia. limes only, so that's therefore what the term ("manao" มะนาว) means. don't make things more complicated than they need to be!
