Where can you watch the spectacle of bar girls and katoeys going to work and foreign guys going to ogle them, all for the price of 60bt with no hassle? Big Dogs at the entrance of Nana is one of those places.
I met up with Koolbreez and BK and enjoyed several hours of conversation and ogling. BK revelled in his Russian Youtube videos on his iPhone while we all talked about the state of the world, Thailand (of course), Hong Kong and the view available from our seats. We also talked technology, e-books, and movies and TV shows.
The Nana burger shop was open. KB pointed out that the man and woman who own it now hire an employee to run it, as they now run another enterprise. It had some customers, including me, but the kabob cart next to it had more customers.
BK told me about the Bamboo Bar on Soi 3 having Russian food as well as Lebanese. And, he went off to have a late snack. Wish he had told me before I bought my burger, otherwise I would have joined him. Oh well, another night. The burger was better than most I have had in Thailand, but would be sub-standard in most Western countries. 100bt with egg and cheese.
I gather that some (all?) of the girls there are good to go. Don't know about bar fines or ST/LT prices, but there are lots of choices just steps away if that is what you are looking for.
If you are walking from Cowboy to Nana its best to walk on the even Soi side of Sukhumvit. Much more room to walk, since there are fewer carts on the sidewalk. You miss the circus around Sois 3-7 which, IMO, is a good thing.
The odd side (odd in several ways 555) is a bit cleaner since some of the hotels/shopping centers have been finished and are open. Some, like Terminal 21, have no shops in front of them. Being slow season its a bit easier to walk the Soi at night.
Big Dogs is a great place to start your evening. And, if you get bored, you can follow some of the bar girls into your favorite boredom-killing venue in NEP.

... nice characterization... there were a couple of similar vantages I regularly enjoyed a few years back.
... knocking off early every few Fridays or so, a few buddies and I would meet at The Dubliner Irish Pub, just at the soi entry to Washington Square... we would settle into a window table with a couple of cold ones to view the early evening Parade of Katoeys on their way to the now closed Mambo Cabaret... a locals' pasttime only... definately not included in the Lonely Planet Guide.
... the other was a window perch I claimed on the 2nd floor in the now closed Starbucks on lower Sukhumvit, overlooking the confluence of Soi 5 and Sukhumvit Road... there, on the street below, was a collision of pink, brown and black... a culturally sensuous buffet to attend with my coffee, and a periodic diversion from my work.
... the whores and tuk-tuk drivers and scammers and street vendors and beggars all circling, positioning and then descending on grinning, hapless tourists below... through the full height 2nd floor picture window, removed from it all, I didn't even need to hear what was being said to understand what deceptions were being purpetrated... cultural voyeurism.

Excellent ! I was tickled reading this because, exactly opposite, on the even side of Suk, I used to do precisely this, nursing a coffee by the window on the first floor coffee-shop-cum-reception of the Parkway Inn when I stayed there on a couple of visits. Oh, such an entertaining way to enjoy your coffee!

Years ago it was the bar opposite Big Dogs that was the packed out prime position for NEP people watching - Lucky Lukes I think it was called, dont if its still there or what happened to it...

It's still there, but is farther into the NANA entrance so there is no real view of the street, just people entering NANA.
There is the outside balcony above Lucky Luke's on the second floor also, with all drinks bt59. It used to be the Big Mango years back, but has changed hands a number of times since then, and now has cheap drinks to get customers into that dead corner.

After Jules Bar just up the road Lucky Lukes was THE place to get started years ago... few bottles of cold dutch courage then off into the gogo's - ahh, them were the days!
