I found this saved as a draft, which I wrote on the plane on my way out last time, and then never posted.

Although it refers to October & November 2008, and may be a bit outdated, some may still find it interesting.

=========================================

I have stayed at a few places in Bangkok during the past 45 days. I also checked a few others for the sake of gathering information for future visits.

Some prices I am pulling from memory, thus do may not remember the exact amount (as shown by the XX).

* Merisses Sukhumvit soi 16 - THB 1,850 - Free Internet - Breakfast included.
For detailed report, read here http://bkkx.com/cgi-bin/forum/topic.cgi?forum=7&topic=1407&start=10
Very girl friendly; lobby staff very helpful, to the point of even helping bring the girl up when she forgets the room number after going to 7-11 to buy condoms. However, got the impression that the staff are all members of the family that owns it (somehow for a city hotel where I keep bringing different girls, I prefer to deal with employees rather than with old lady owner).
In summary, though nice rooms... for some reason which I can not ascertain what it is, I doubt I will make it a top choice for the time being.

* Citadines Sukhumvit soi 16 - THB 1,7XX - Free Internet - No breakfast - No daily cleaning of room unless xtra payment of THB 100/day.
Girl friendly, though they take ID of the girl upon arrival only to be returned when she leaves. I prefer when they do not even ask for the ID - sometime I have friends (good girls) with whom I do not have sex who come visit me for a chat, and would prefer if they did not subject them to this ID thing. Bed may be on the small side for big guys who like to do LTs (it is just a full bed - not even queen size) - it doesnīt bother me, as more often than not, I just go for STs.

* Citadines Sukhumvit soi 23 - Didnīt stay there. However thought it was a bit far down the soi from Sukhumvit.

* Citadines Sukhumvit soi 8 - Didnīt stay there. I thought it was a bit far down the soi from Sukhumvit (they do have a tuk tuk)

* Le Fenix Sukhumvit soi 11 - THB 1,6XX - Free Internet if you are a repeat guest - Breakfast not included in that rate (THB 300 xtra)
I stayed here last year and liked it a lot, despite the small rooms. Now, I felt disappointed. For such a new hotel, the rooms are not well maintained. Had to change from the first room, because of bad odor in the bathroom. Had to change from the second room due to high noise from the air/con. The rooms look after less than two years old very run down. Though the common areas are very well mantained. Staff very friendly and pleasant. I doubt that I will stay here again.

* Dream Sukhumvit soi 15 - THB 2,350 - Free Internet - Breakfast included.
Loved the place. At this rate I think was the best value of all. Everything was very good. I was not able to extend my stay at the same rate. It is a matter of luck getting this rate (on top of all they upgraded me). If I can get that rate every single time, I would definitively stay there.

* Grottino
Same good old Grottino... not feeling as new as it used to. And with the recent addition of lowered priced hotels with the same or better value, it starts to not be so appealing as it once did.

* Citadines soi 11 - THB 1,6XX - Free Internet - No breakfast - No daily cleaning of room unless xtra payment of THB 100/day.
Checked in the day it opened. Same rooms as all other Citadines. Loved the location. Probably will make it one of first choices for upcoming visits. Staff very nice and helpful; they happily went to the 7-11 to buy stuff for me.

* Smart Suites soi 11 - Do not remember price now, but in the same range as the others. I didn't stay there but checked the rooms. Though decent, I was not impressed. Despite being close to Le Fenix and Q bar, those few meters further away from Sukhumvit start to make it look far. Got the impression that like Merisses, it also is run by the family that owns it.

* Djarjeeling. Do not remember price now, but in the same range as the others. I didn't stay there but checked the rooms. Looked nice. I liked the location and the cute mini-lobby. But rooms seemed small. Perhaps ok for a couple of days, but may feel cramped if staying longer.

=========================================

Looking back and summarizing, I was very happy with Dream and also with Citadines soi 11; probably they will first come to mind when trying to make any forecoming reservation. A bit disappointed with Le Fenix. Merisses was just ok... however, I doubt I will look into staying there again.

I love the Dream Hotel on Soi 15, and agree that it is by far the best value for money at the higher end. Booked on AsiaRooms.com for this coming March ($500 for six nights incl breakfast).

Besides my current favourite Citadine Soi 11 I'm waiting for the new President Palace to open in March finally... brand new and rooms look great on the website... Hope they have a nice introductory rate, otherwise it should be around 3KB...

I agree. Dream is a very nice, mid-range hotel. Cheaper than JWM and Westin, and unique rooms with cool lighting and plasma tvs.

But I have to say that the incredibly thick curtains covering the windows in my room smelled horribly of mildew. Every time I took a shower, the curtains would absorb a little humidity and begin to smell like a dank yak in a Turkish steam room. There's nothing quite like a dank yak to ruin a hotel room.

I do take longer than average showers because I'm remarkably dirty, but that doesn't mean that the bedroom curtains should stink. I requested a different room but was told that all the rooms that correspond to my cheap room-rate were booked. Sarcastically, I asked the receptionist if I could just sleep in the lobby, which prompted her to look at me very strangely and then start giggling. I told her I was serious.

"No. No. You no sleep in lobby."

"Why not? Just give me a little discount, and I'll sleep on the table over there."

"No. No. You serious? You talk to manager."

<manager appears>

"My room smells like a wet yak."

"What yak?"

"Big furry animal that roams the plains of central Asia."

"Ohhh....yak.... Ok....What you want me do."

"I need a new room that doesn't smell like a yak."

Blah...Blah....At this point I convinced her to come to my room and smell the Ode de Yak Water. She agreed, and upgraded me to a junior suite at no additional charge, since the smaller rooms were booked.

So, despite the yak problem, they seemed very accommodating and quite committed to customer satisfaction. Very nice place that I would recommend to anyone.

Buttman, thanks for your input. I have fortunately never encountered anything like that at Dream or I would have asked, like you, to sleep in the lobby too. It is quite nice down there. I have always felt that the rooms were very clean and well kept up. Last time I was there was in the original building back in April 2008.

I have always liked their attitude there, everyone is very friendly and polite, never felt any awkwardness bringing home guests or having girls ordered in. For my money I will stay there over JW M or Westin which are twice the price. Nice small pool area, good breakfast. It's just too bad there is no action at the bar. But on the other hand, I always feel like I am staying in a normal hotel when I am there, rather than... well, a punter's parking place. It is well above places like LeFenix and the other "boutique" hotels, and only slightly more expensive.

I am amazed that they finally understood what you meant by a yak, or did they? I am not sure there is a thai word for yak. Perhaps ควายปุย khwaay bpuy?

The Thai word for Yak is จามรี... (JahmRee).

Thanks DrL, I'm impressed. But does the average thai recognize the word, or know what the thing looks like, let alone have tasted its pungent milk? I once dated a mongolian girl who wouldn't stop going on about how important the yaks were to her family, people, etc. From what I understood, the yak is the equivalent of our Wholefoods in the States.

But back on thread, one of the other reasons I like the Dream Hotel is that the elevators are door-key restricted, and so the front desk does not ask for IDs and I don't have to worry about strangers wandering the hallways.

I have never worried about that. I really have never thought about the people walking outside my room. Is there any reason I should?
