Saucytim, maybe I misunderstand your post but I have never had to pay a joiner fee or any extra fee when I have actually checked in with the lady and I have done that numerous times at various levels of hotels. Perhaps you mean the "my wife will be checking in later" line was unsuccessful - that approach seems to depend on the hotel staff at the time - some members here report success with that approach provided the room was booked and paid for as a double room already. Personally I always found it better to just stay only at Guest Friendly hotels. Enjoy.

Minder, Good for you. Maybe you have a special way with the staff. But I can assure you in Thailand there are hotels which are so strict they will check your'wifes surname is the same as yours and that you both flew in togethet from overseas. EG Ambassador hotel and Amari Atrium to name a few. Cheers Saucytim

That is, you forget who is paying who and you tolerate behavior from service staff that you would never tolerate at home. My point is simple - if you have a confirmed booking at a hotel for two people the hotel has no right to charge extra for those two people just because you are not married, because the moon if full or because your partner might be a bar girl. No-one has ever tried it with me and if I have a special way with the staff that apparently others don't have then its being nice but firm. IMO any man who would "kow-tow" to any hotel the way you describe (provide proof of marriage, proof of travel together etc) needs to find a mirror and take a long look at himself.
