Oldtimer

Oldtimer is still a JW Marriott fan, but thinking of trying out Landmark for a few days later this month. The thing is Oldtimer likes a one bedroom suite for the two ladies he usually accommodates...this enables him to get on the web early in the morning without disturbing the sleeping beauties.
The trouble is JW rates have been crepping up substantially over the past three or four years to the point where it mght be worth trying somewhere else. Plus Oldtimer particularly likes the food servces at the Landmark. We shall see.

I stayed at the JW Marriott 4 different times during April-May this year. I got a Government rate of $160 on the executive floor. But with all the add-on tax, the room was about $200 per night. 3 or 4 years ago I could get the same room for about $100 complete.
Would I do it again, Oh yes I would. It's great to be at that location. View of Nana Plaza at night is way cool (and the girls really like it).

Firstly Just a Guy,, are you quoting Fijian dollars? Canadian dollars? New Zealand dollars ? Australian Dollars? the list goes on. The exchange rates do vary considerably, my thinking is best to quote in THAI BAHT as we are talking about THAILAND 
Secondly why are you all so unkind to Penbelly?" if the man wants a "jump" we should at least assist him in his latest enterprise. I am sure more than a few members will be willing to give him a "PUSH " in the right direction.

I've stayed at the Marriott several times. It's wonderful, and I'm sure you'll enjoy it more than Nana.
They have a delicious buffet, but they don't have a wide selection of banana flavored items. You may find it a bit limiting.
They definitely are girl-friendly.
I'm not sure what their policy is regarding large, ape-like guests, though. At the moment, I believe they are only allowing humans to reserve rooms. Not sure if this is a concern for you.....
Otherwise, I fully recommend it.

I had to go to a meeting in Bangkok Thursday night, all my usual haunts were full... maybe the Kings Celebrations? Anyway all that I could get on short notice was the JW Marriot. Nice place I s'pose and handy to NP but the room cost was a bit stiff at US$179!! then I went for brekky Friday morning and was told it wasn't complimentary! I reckon for that cost they could chuck in a few snags, bumnuts a cup of coffee. Then to top it off when I checked out I told them I had two Heinekens out of the mini-bar [I normally replace these from the 7-11 but I didn't get time] So what do you reckon they charged me for two can of dogpiss Heineken??? 588baht!!! thats close to 10 aussy dollars a tin mate, f***en ridiculous!! I asked them to check, they confirmed it was correct, I complained, didn't make any difference. Then they had the cheek to try and give me a Marriot rewards card, ha! stick it, they won't see my credit card again. Thievin arseholes..

I don't know what you are complaining about. The minibar charges are clearly labled and you agree to the room rate, so they are not thieves. THievery is when they charge you more than they promised, or adding on illegal credit card surcharges.
The room rate you paid was proably a bit higher than average for the JW Marriott, but as you said most hotels are full because of the King's celebration so there is not much discounting. Believe it or not, in 2000 I stayed there for a week at $55 per night.
If you think 588 baht for 2 Heinekens is bad, I stayed at a Hyatt hotel in the US that had half liter bottles of water in their minibar (Hyatt brand water, which means it was filtered tap water) that were $5 USD each. And remember that in the US, the tap water is OK to drink.

If you want to raid the hotel minibar to satisfy those late night munchies (for you or her) then you can often replenish the things you've eaten with a quick trip down to 7-11.
Seems America is all about 'revenue enhancers' - basics are cheap but extras cost stupid money. 1-litre bottle of Evian in my hotel room last trip had a tag around its neck with US$12 written on it.

Mini bar,, what the F is that,,,,oh that little area designed to steal money.
I haven't seen one in nigh on 10 years,, they were there but I just chose to NOT see them.
First walk about always includes a trip to 7 / 11 or similiar no matter were I am staying,,,,common sense must prevail.
I remember my TEPRIDATION ( spelling) over my first trip to Singapore,, the story of my mate spending $US5.00 dollars ( note I quote US dollars not just $ as I am not an arrogant American ass) for a single glass of milk at his hotel???? AHHH
His story was true,, I checked the in-house price list and it showed approximately 5 ugly useless green bills for a single glass of milk.,,, but guess what,, I pro-activiley walked across the street,, a major excercise of less than 50 metres ( about 150 feet for you un-metrised morons) to a petrol / gas shop ( station actually) and found 2 litre,,, ( just under a half gallon for you non >>> you get the idea) milk forless than 2 usless gren pieces of paper known as US$ 2.00.
Whilst I am having a moan,, people here in Aus are really giving me the shits complaining about petrol prices,,, they happily pay AUD 3.00 for a 300ml of bottled water but bitch about paying AUD1.40 per litre for petrol,,,fken idiots.
