Like Sanook I have stayed at the Federal for more years than I care to remember - since mid-80s. Things there never change which is part of its charm. Same staff, same furnishings etc, etc. Last visit was July last year. Yes, it's a very friendly place but certainly in need of some serious renovation and tidying up. Have also stayed at Royal Asia quite a few times over past 3 years. The hotel part - RA Lodge - is a slightly higher standard than Federal. But service is not as good (understaffed on the housekeeping side to keep down costs I guess) - no coffee shop to speak of (there is a restuarant but little used by guests it seems) - have never tried room service there. Guest friendly for sure - hit and miss on the ID check - seems to depend on when you get back in the evening. Two girls seems OK - never had a problem.
I prefer RA Paradise which is part of the same operation. Rooms spacious and generally OK not up to quality of many serviced apartments but not too pricey. Prefer the greater privacy - reckon you could take almost any number of girls back at once provided you don't make too much of a fuss about it. I always keep my room key on me so I never need to go back to reception in the main Asia Lodge block. Paradise has a guarded gate (closed at night) but the guards never hassle you at all.
Quiet location but the tuk tuk ride can be troublesome as the kit they use is pretty ropey and breaks down almost every day for a while. Small pool on roof - ok if you need it.
If you want to relax and not be bothered then Royal Asia is OK - it's not classey but its comfortable and you can do pretty much what you want.

Thanks Sanook - you've reminded me of many of the reasons that I have headed back to the Fed once in a while and no doubt will again in the future.
The gate at RA Paradise is not locked. They have a large metal gate into the driveway for vehicles and a smaller pedestrian entry gate (always open) by the guardhouse. I guess your lady could get in with a suitable story - or maybe she could call you when she arrives and you can see her in - with my regulars they have come and gone with no problems. Make sure the lady knows where the entrance is - about 40 metres back up the soi from the tuk tuk drop off point. Guards speak little English by the way. Staff at RA not up to the Fed standard - last guy who took my case to the room was so badly sighted he couldn't even find the lift button to push!
You have to make a few rules of the game clear on housekeeping. I am not a particularly late riser so I like the room cleaned up around late morning ready for some rest (!) in the afternoon. But you need to make it clear to the reception or housekeeper if you see her as otherwise it can be 3-4pm before the room is done. Extra towels no problem - I give the maid B100 at the beginning of my stay and get 4 a day.
Once you get to know them its a friendly place and very laid back but in a different way from the Fed. RA doesn't hassle you - Fed treats you like an old returning friend and there are plenty of people who have stayed there for 20 years or more.

Friend of mine stayed in the RAL. Paid THB 700 per night. Said the rooms were simple but clean. Girl friendly, no problems at all. They have a free tuk tuk service from the mouth of the soi to the hotel.
He moved eventually to the Somerset.

Just came back from Thailand for a five weeks holiday. I have been in Thailand many times for the last twenty years spending between 900 baths and 2500 baths for a night in hotel and I had this time the worst experience I ever had in Thailand, in Royal Asia Lodge. For 1100 baths it is really overpriced. Terrible maintenance, completely run down, I think it is at the level of a cheap hotel of 500 baths a night.
I also wanted to try the Grace hotel for two nights at the beginning of my stay. Just to have my own opinion. Quite good for 1200 baths a night in the new wing. Big room, big bed and good service. The environment is special but quite acceptable.
