I picked up a second hand lap-top especially for BKK, got it for AUD $399, Toshiba with most of the extras need and if it got stolen it would not be that big a deal.
Cheers
Mel

About laptops: I have a notebook lock that I wire to a chair or similar. It is not bullet proof, but it make it less tempting to try to grab it.

Great idea until you come home drunk and decide to do your TG in the chair and the laptop comes crashing to the floor. Doh!

The coolest room is the one-bedroom on the 16th floor. It is the only room on that floor and the front door opens up to the pool deck...

I booked this room for four nights in mid-March. I just hope the hotel is cool about bringing back three or four ladies at a time.

Has anyone stayed at Aldephi Suites and Legacy Suites? Same property owners but the studios are a little cheaper and they are 3 sqm larger at Legacy. I've read reports both ways so far.

Stayed at Adelphi Suites for 3 nights in early March 2008.

Adelphi Suites is located less than 200 yards down Sukhumvit Soi 8, on the right hand side of the street, only a little way past the small sub-soi where Lolitas is located. It is almost opposite the Soi 8 pub. The walk to the steps of Nana BTS takes no more than 5 minutes. For me, this is the best-located hotel that I have stayed at in Sukhumvit. The Landmark would be better, but I don’t have 5,000 Baht a night to spend on hotels.

The services apartments are very new with a modern feel, I was very impressed with the lobby and public areas and corridors. Like Majestic Grande there are only two lifts, but unlike Majestic Grande they were not busy during my stay, so I did not have a long wait for the lifts at any time.

The clientele seemed to be very mixed, some falang couples, a few lone punters, some falangs with Thai girlfriends/wives, at least one Thai couple. Thankfully, there were no kids. No idea whether the place was full, but it was very quiet in the rooms and corridors, no disturbance at all until my TGF turned on the DVD player in the room. I had booked a Studio room, but was upgraded to a one bedroom suite on check-in. Didn’t have any use for the apartments kitchen facilities as I was on holiday. The room included a microwave and a washing machine. Good laundry facilities are available nearby on Soi 8, between the two sub-sois where Lolitas and Aviva Massage are located. The Suite had two very nice Samsung 32” flat screen TVs, so my TGF was able to watch her karaoke DVD/VCD in one room whilst I watched football (‘till I dozed off) in the other. Really liked the room, the only issue I had was with the lighting, which was controlled by relays. If you flipped the master switch off, all the lights went out, including the bathroom, flipping the master switch back on, only brought the hallway light back on. This did not impress the TGF too much; who was in the bathroom on more than one occasion when I did this. Also some of the lights (the one over the desk and the one over the dressing table did not always work, flipping the master switch on and off rectified this. Normally I would have spent some time working out what was going on here, but my holiday time was running out. Air conditioning (2 units) worked well and the bed was very comfortable. I slept soundly.

I enjoyed the breakfast at Adelphi Suites, served in the Rojo Restaurant as much fruit juice as I wanted, coffee, cereals, eggs, bacon, tomato, hash browns and a good choice of fresh fruit to finish. Not as extensive a choice for breakfast as the Majestic Grande, but the place is much smaller. The Majestic Grande was always horrendously busy at breakfast; I always had to wait for a table during my last stay there in October 2006. Breakfast is important to me, even if I don’t eat it until after midday.

In Soi 8 in common with many of the sois in this area in can be difficult to get a taxi to use the meter. Not a problem normally, because it is only a short walk to Sukhumvit. On checkout, I asked the concierge to get me a meter taxi, I was given the choice of 400 Baht to Suvarnabhumi including toll way or use the meter. I opted for the meter, but the driver was obviously not happy about my choice. As we drove to the airport, he made me feel a little uncomfortable and I wondered if I had been wise sticking to my guns for 100 Baht.

Adelphi Suites had already confirmed by e-mail that I could bring a girl to the hotel; it would be no problem and free of charge as well. I never got to test the procedure out, as my TGF stayed with me throughout. She arrived shortly after me and had to check-in with her ID card, just as I had.

I paid 2500 Baht and consider Adelphi Suites a bargain at that price always assuming that the bedroom of my Suite was roughly the same as the Studio would have been. My next visit to Bangkok won’t be until November when Adelphi Suites is currently priced at 3099 Baht for the Studio, more than I really want to pay on this trip.

I noticed all the same things as you for the reason not to get the one-bedroom, actually I tried for no breakfast too as I never get up for breakfast unless it's time to go home so I have to get up early.

I asked in an e-mail as well and they confirmed no joiner fee, but hopefully it will stay like that as sometimes hotels change over time.

Unfortunately for some reason they raised their price in like 3 weeks time. I asked for a quote in the beginning of Feb. and in three weeks they reflected 2899 for the Studio and not 2699 as quoted a short time before. Oh well boo hoo, I actually reserved through another site as it was cheaper than the Adelphi site itself. Just as a note they have told me if booking with them they will give you 10% off if staying for 7 or more days. Big whoops it was still more expensive than the site I made the reservation from.

Can anyone confirm if the internet access is a separate cost to the rooms in Adelphi ?

I booked directly through the hotel website and internet service is free at the rate I booked for a studio. I think they charge you if you book through an outside agency.
