Great reviews on the various hotels.
I have stayed at Peninsula and Sheraton Grande.
I really enjoyed the Penn, its waterfornt location and pool area is very spacious and offers different perspective to Bangkok.
When I stayed there is was during US masters, so took full advantage of the extra large baths and built in TV screens in the bathroom - me, 2 bangkok beauties in a bath, champagne and the masters live at 5am. Now that is a way to finish a night out.
One other I would recommend is the Sukothai - simple, elegant, great rooms and pool area.

Must agree with the posters preference for the Shangr-La Horizon Suites and rooms. 25th floor and up, with free food and drinks served from 5:30-7:30 in the Horizon Lounge. Used to fill-up on smoked salmon and Aussie wine.

Just back from 2 great weeks in July and two hotels to add to my invaluable list
THE CONRAD - bangkok- rooms very nice and complete- better than its southern neighbor the Plaza Athenee- exec floor had 5 brand new Macs free to use- breakfast buffet (my tgf loved it) but much better downstairs than in lounge) -----pool nicer than JW Marriott, Landmark- not as nice as Sheraton Grande----- gym- slightly better than average- Negatives: its even farther from the skytrain than Plaza Athenee on a not well lit street-----for those of us who make dinner out of the free snacks with evening drinks- that was hard to do here-
MERIDIAN- Phuket- on a private beach- 7 min from Bangla Rd, so you are away from the noise --- shuttle runs 10 times/day 260 baht r/t--- beautiful rooms- great beach- 4 pools- wonderful beach bar- huge buffet breakfast--------- Negatives- expensive to use computers- and the shuttle should be free

UPDATE FOR 2009-
THE INTERCONTINENTAL- it was a nice hotel- but with too many negatives- 1) location- near bts but not much else except Platinum ( any Thai girl can smell this place from 5 blocks away) ---2) pool too small with too few chairs and 3) they got rid of all the great food in Exec lounge that everyone on Trip Advisor raved about and replaced with a few pieces of sushi- so still had to go out for dinner. Will not repeat
UPDATE: THE MONTIEN- -stayed my last night for old times sake- (only hotel in bkk that I quit because they charged for short time guest) -- I was the only one in Exec lounge- and after asking if I wanted anything else from the meager offerings- she cleaned up ---meaning there was no other exec floor guest in hotel- I also got off on another floor by mistake and all the hall lights were out. Too bad- its really great for the money-
UPDATE: LANDMARK- they completely re-did exec lounge- and the food is great- it can't touch my 3 favorites- but it is also quite a bit cheaper and there's bang for the buck here.

MILLENNIUM GRANDE SUKHUMVIT- not too many 5 stars I have not tried- so had to give it a try. Good location near soi cowboy- breakfast was quite good- as was food/drinks in exec lounge- gym good- pool too small for this large a hotel- It is not near my top picks- but nothing really wrong esp. if you can get a good rate !!

CE---indeed- 35 dollars???? are you sure??? Went with Evil Penevil- I think he paid 2000 baht-room only--- I paid about 4000 including exec floor with breakfast/drinks/snacks that were almost dinner for 2

Best deal I got on the GM was 3100 for a Deluxe Room with Brekkie back in July, shortly after Wotif had a mystery deal at 2499, room was nice but already looked old and banged up, front desk staff is especially easy on the eyes - prefer the Westin and the JW MArriot. I dont get that 5* feel at the GM feels more like an apartment building to me.
Looking for deals for the 1st week of Jan for about 9 days -any advice?

calzoid- I always start on" tripadvisor.com" they have crazies like me who rate every hotel- after a few hundred reviews you get pretty good idea of plus/minus- then they have links to every travel website with that hotel- from priceline to expedia-
