Heh, heh - what you're describing there is a classic case of Thai subversion. Anyone who tries to make uncongenial rules & regulations stick in this place will eventually go mad.

In general, I think Thai hotel staff just detest being made to enforce rules of this kind, as it cuts right against the cultural grain. All their instincts are to turn a blind eye, and in any case (they think) it's the most natural thing in the world for a guy who can afford it to want to sleep with a pretty girl. Instead, they're forced to lecture paying 5-star guests (clearly their 'superiors') about what they can and can't do, and I think most of them are extremely uncomfortable with this.

Sometimes it can be quite fun to torture them. Act astonished and insulted, muster as much lofty hauteur as you can, then go into suppressed-rage- beneath-a-thin-veneer-of-outward-politeness mode:

"I'm sorry, are you telling me that my friend is not a suitable visitor for your hotel? Why wasn't I told when I checked in who I may or may not associate with?"

No, sir, no... no visitors in room at all... so sorry... shuffle, shuffle... hotel policy... strict instructions... etc etc

"I intend to spend the night with this young lady. Do I understand that you are refusing to let me go up to my room? Do I now have to find somewhere else to sleep tonight?"

When they're sufficiently miserable (privately, they agree with you, and you get brownie points for not blowing your top), you can relent. You understand - magnanimous concession - that this abominable rudeness is not altogether their fault personally, and now you're going to give them a chance to prove it. So, OK, how are WE going to co-operate to fix OUR little problem?

I find that this sort of thing usually works wonders up to and including Thai duty manager level. Of course, a tip is usually appropriate as well.

If you get referred to some Nordic blonde with steely blue eyes, forget it. You're not going to get any change out of her.

That is so true. Dop take in mind that the Sofitel does have security in mind for us. I think they just don't want unregistered or guests that have not checked in to go into your suite.
I took a girl from Christies on Soi 33 up to my room yesterday after she checked in at the desk and there was no problem.

Well, if a hotel just wants guests to register for their own own security (and yours), I think that's perfectly reasonable and you should willingly co-operate. Also, if you you have a tarty-looking BG on your hands, I think it's only good manners not to display her in the public areas of an upscale place - particularly if it's tourist-oriented with a good number of female guests. That would apply even even if you checked her in - a little discretion never hurt anyone, and if they're prepared to be reasonable, so should you be.

Left to themselves, I think Thai staff are adept at handling these situations with great tact and finesse. They certainly don't want to piss you off.
