i just returned from bangkok. I stayed at jw marriott for the mafority of the trip. I got it for $55 on priceline. I ended up coming to bangkok two days earlier than I had originally planned and had to do priceline on short notice. my initial $55 bid was rejected and I resubmitted a $65 bid which was accepted by the westin grand sukhumvit.

both hotels are nice 5 star hotels and very guest friendly. jw marriott never asked for girls id and westin asked the first night but not the second. I think that jw marriott is the nicer hotel overall - better lobby and facilities, especially the health club. but the room in the westin was better than either of the rooms I stayed in at the jw marriott. one last thing, those westin "dream" mattresses are awesome.

I might be an ignorant but I just guess i'm not the only in this forum.

Can someone explain how Priceline.com is working?

If I understood a bit what has been said, you have to make a sort of inquiry and proposing the prices and dates, right? Firstly, I thought I could find in this place, some kinds of 'lastminute' offers from teh hotels, just to fill-in their building.

What is the actual process ?

Jeff,

Priceline has an interesting business model. The customer submits a bid on what he/she is willing to pay for a specific class of accomodation in a specific area on specific dates. After the bid is submitted, you are notified if any Priceline partners accept your price. You cannot change your mind after submitting your bid, and your credit card is immediately charged if your bid is accepted.

For example, I have submitted the following:

Bid A: Dec 1 to Dec 4, 5 star, Sukhumvit area, $55 USD
Bid B: Dec 4 to Dec 8, 5 star, Riverside/Silom, $65 USD

Bid A got me the JW Marriot
Bid B got me the Shangri-La

Bids do not include taxes, so the amount you're charged will be 15-20% higher. Priceline bookings also usually do not include free breakfast, or frequent flier miles.

In addition, there are limitations on how many bids you can submit without varying your parameters.

There is a third party web site where you can preview successful bids to get an idea of what hotel you can get for what price. Look at http://www.biddingfortravel.com

Hope this clears up the mystery.

Great stuff!
I was about to make my hotel arrangements for my next trip to LOS in January.
I usually stay at either the Marriott or the Novotel Lotus depending on funds available. I was about to book the Novotel but thought I'd have a punt on priceline after reading through this thread. I'd never heard of priceline until a couple of hours ago.
I just got the Marriott confirmed for 33 quid a night ($56) plus taxes. This makes me very happy.
Thanks to all the previous posters for the info.

thaiaficionado,
Your explanations are very useful and i'd like to thank you for taking time posting these esplanations.
If I understand correctly, when applying for Bid 1 for example, you are just submitting an area and not an hotel.
Anyway, i'll take time exploring http://www.biddingfortravel.com
Thanks

Jeff,

That's correct, you do not bid on a specific property. The biddingfortravel web site can give you an idea of what you may get, but it is not a guarantee you will get the same hotel as previous postings of successful bids.

I've used Priceline several times before, and have been suprised a few times. Plesantly suprised however, since I got a slightly better hotel than the hotel I expected.

The only 'safe' bid I know of was on a 5 star hotel on the Las Vegas Strip, since The Venetian was the only 5 star property on The Strip that was partnering with Priceline at the time. BTW, I bid $79 and paid $89 including tax, whereas expedia/travelocity listed $159 + tax for same dates (mid-week).

Another limitation of Priceline however, is if you're too ill to travel, I believe there are no refunds.

I have used priceline two times and I have found that the only bidding you do should be for a 5 star property. I bid on a 4 star for $40 and got the Novotel Lotus. After adding the taxes and not getting breakfast I found that several Web-sites offered rates at the Lotus for the same price, including taxes and including breakfast.

Shouldn't you have bid lower for a 4 star going by what the 5 star guys have bid?

I have never used Priceline but will look into it later, my thoughts are that you should check out the regular ebooking sites first to get a feel for the prices, noting that most of them include the tax's

If you buy a travel insurance which is about 5 dollars per night then you will get your full refund.

FYI Bellagio is also on price line list as comes to Las Vegas
