I almost never buy anything when on travel. Most stuff is available home or nearby at almost equal prices anyway.
But I recall to have heard that real pearls should be a good bargain in LOS??
Mrs JJ is up for both birthday and celebrating marriage date (yes, yes poor woman - so now I filled you all in....!) - so yours truly better come up with something out of the ordinary on this trip starting in 2 weeks!
A real pearl necklace would sure do the "trick" - but I have an internal warning sign flashing all over the place and donīt know how to tell the real thing from a fake. Anyone more experienced in this special field is sure welcome with a tip! Cost? Where to purchase safely?

I bought a 8.5 cm size pearl necklace for my SO when in Phuket a year ago. Buy it from a big, well known establishment. They will give you a certificate of authenticity. I bought it from a big jewelry place called "Wang...somehting". The sales lady was very educational. A couple of pointers : One : the bigger the pearl, the more expensive provided all the pearls on the strand are roughly the same size and perfectly round ( this is very important that they are perfectly round. You don't want those that come with odd shapes and sizes. Some of them maybe big, but worthless if they are not round) Color is also important. The "luster" is the key. ( the good ones "shine" with lovely colors, the bad ones sort of look dull and dead ). Phuket is famous for pearl because they have huge pearl farms nearbye. Japanese pearls are the most expensive but not necessarily all that much better than the Thai pearls unless you want the "name recognition". If you are from US, pearl necklace with similar sizes and quality can cost you about 2.5-3 times more from jewelry or Dept store. Definitely a better buy from LOS. If your wife loves pearls, you could get a lot of kudo from her. Earned myself another pass from my SO this year to Phuket!! 5555555

Can't believe you asked about pearl necklaces here in this forum with so many jokers running around.
Oh the temptation to let loose with a joke is almost too great. 
But seriously...best advice would be to seek the services of a reputable jeweler in the area...possibly at one of the malls.
