Veteran Brothers, your advice is appreciated. I'm taking my first trip to LOS in January. Like everybody, I have my own particular ways of taking care of myself, especially since I have some mild hypoglycemic tendencies. For one thing, I eat apples with cashew butter every day. The glycemic index is very low with apples, and I can go for hours without feeling weak or hungry. I know that apples are rare in Thailand, so question #1: what kind of low glycemic fruit do they have there that I can get easily at the hotel and eat in my room at night? What is usually included in a hotel fruit basket there? I'm staying at the Sheraton Sukhumvit. Question #2: I usually mix whey protein with fruit juice in the evening. I'll bring the protein in packets. What kind of low glycemic fresh fruit juices do they have there? Over here I usually drink a mixture of apple with unsweetened cranberry. Of course I'm wide open to new experiences but want to be able to take care of the blood sugar situation wisely.

You can easily find apples in the LOS as well. I believe that the best selection is available at hypermarkets. Never have any difficulty to buy different varieties of apples at Tesco/Lotus, Big C, Carrefour (for example).

FG is dead right. try the regular supermarkets as well. Robinson (just on the corner of Soi 19 not far from the Sheraton) has fresh fruit in the basement area where you can get loadsa juices as well, just like Moma used t'make!

Yeah, the best markets for you near Sheraton is foodland in Soi 5 and Villa on sukhumvit near soi 33. Hepas of apples and Villa caters to the large farang base around there, they have heaps of western foods in there and plenty of apples.
As for cashew butter, never heard of it, might be safer to bring it with you if you can.
For juices, you can buy all sorts here, but for your requirements I am not sure. Maybe do some web research and find out which TROPICAL fruits would suit you best. There are a number of fresh juice stalls around, apart from all the juices available in Villa and Foodland, you can try some different juices in some small stands around, one in particular is on the Nana skytrain station, a lot of the stations have them, but not all, they seel some different and very tasty juices.
Also another very good centre is in The Emporium, they have an excellent selection of all kinds of stuff up there.
Just remember that items you are used to from the west, are generally more expensive here for obvious reasons.

Thailand drives me crazy. The level of choice of food for the Western taste is so much better than in my neck of the woods. Yes prices are a little high sometimes but overall, it's still ball park.
One question....does anyone know the pesticide policy (chemical sprays used on fruts/vegies) in Thailand?
China uses great amounts of DDT still (as well as other sprays avoided or outlawed in other countries). So I never eat any fruit unpeeled, and have to make my own juices--apple and orange juice, unless I buy imported bottled juice--very expensive.
I get the impression sprays are used sensibly in Thailand.
Right? Wrong?

chemicals are added to shitloads of foods here, you hear about it regularly, from additives to pork meat to make it loook nicer in the markets, to additives to prawn farms to grow bigger and kill various disease and pests and increased use of chemicals in watermelons etc etc.
I am going to buy a coupla rai and employ a gardner and grow my own shit soon.
There are some organic suppliers starting up here, you see there produce in the supermarkets a lot now and they claim to be chemical and all that free.
You need to remember that the poor farmer that is growing the stuff, really sometimes does not give a shit, or even know what damgae the extra strength stuff he uses can do and how it will remain on or in the produce for long term. He wants to make a living and feed his kids, he does not particulalry care what happens to it after he is paid and it is shipped off for someone else to worry about. It is the old TIT and TIA syndrome of who gives a shit.
