For the doctors out there.

Is it useful to take antibiotics as a matter of course, even if no symptoms are present? Does such an action confer any protection?

I'm thinking of a broad-spectrum antibiotic.

(I shall not change my very prudent approach to life even if I do take them!)

This improper use of antibiotics significantly adds to the number of antibiotic resistant strains of bacteria e.g. MRSA

This improper use is unfortunately widespread throughout the world and especially in places where it can be bought without prescription by anybody on the streets such as Thailand

If you're worried about contracting stuff research what is actually endemic or likely wherever you are, e.g Thailand - Dengue take precautions against getting bitten by mosquitoes

It's a contested topic, to say the least, and despite comments like "only absolute idiots take antibiotics in a prophylactic way", it *can* be beneficial **IF DONE PROPERLY**.

People train resistant strains NOT by taking anti-biotics prophylactically, but by taking them improperly. The standard error is for people taking them only 'until they feel better' (2-5 days), and not for the entire regimen (10-12 days). Improper application of antibiotics will kill only a percentage of the germs you are fighting, and those left over develop a resistance to what you are taking (because they survived the first onslaught, and thus are the tougher variety - they then breed into a stronger strain, unless you continue taking the antibiotics for the duration, which kills them all).

Same with Malaria pills () another form of antibiotic) which most pe only take as long as they are in Malaria risk locations, instead of taking the whole dosage - again, that's dumb application.

So, you *can* take antibiotics prophylactically, but MAKE SURE YOU TALK TO YOU DOCTOR (I did with my doctor's blessing), but you need to understand how to take them, and to take them religiously while you do.

The rule of thumb, though, is to not do so, but have them ready WHEN you get sick - and then the same applies: Take them at the first sign of symptoms, take them twice a day, take them religiously, and take the full treatment (10-12 days).

Your mileage, of course, may vary.

Ok lets not confuse things

Antibiotics can be used prophalitically as in the case of malaria.

but you should never take them as a general prophalatic and don't self prescribe
