Hello,

after several visits and many days in BKK I am proud to tell you that I also have a medical problem. No, not what you _might_ think...

Swollen right eye, very red - looks like an infection, perhaps some bacteria due to pollution. Started this morning and feels really bad now.

Could you make a suggestion for a doctor, speaking English and with some specialization on eyes? Name, address + phone? Credit cards welcome?

Perhaps even near Petchaburi Road?

Thanks a lot (and thank god I have a second eye)

If it is what I think it is you won't have a second eye for long.  This may be conjunctivitis, one of the most ferociously contagious of the common infectious diseases.  I used to get this twice a year from judo mats. Don't touch your infected eye at all!

ok doctors:

Bumrungrad (by NEP) - flash, expensive, and Dr.s mostly have board certifications from the West, in my opinion most are money grubbing idiots...

BNH (soi convent by patpong)- staff is better than Bum Dr's speak english also expensive not quite so idiotic

Camillian Hospital (423 soi thonglor) really good doctors who speak english, super cheap - no BS.  This is where I go and I am indifferent to price.

Just get the front desk in your hotel to write the destination in Thai for your cab driver.  No appointment neccesary at any of these places.  If it is conjuctivitis and the specialist is not there - the staff doctor can (more than likely) make the correct diagnosis and prescription.

If it is conjunctivitis, without immediate treatment, both eyes will soon fill with puss and crust over.  Have fun!

Oh, come on boys, it's only the eye, not the egg.

Thanks for the advice, will write a field report tomorrow.

@eyeswideopen (strange name): has writing down the address for the cab driver ever worked? Most I found can't read (and drive either). Since then I know left/right and the numbers (small ones for the driver and big ones for the girls) - no problems anymore. 555

Been there, had that.

Bumrungrad is expensive (relatively), but adequate. Closer to Petchburi Rd., on Asoke, is Rutnin Eye Clinic and Hospital.  Cheaper, quicker service, EXCELLENT care.  Physician spoke English, and confirmed the diagnosis I got at Bumrungrad: viral conjunctivitis.

http://www.rutnin.com/

As has been pointed out, it is EXTREMELY contagious, and can easily infect the other eye, even from your pillow at night, if you toss and turn.  It runs its course in about 3 weeks (per eye!), and IF your cornea doesn't get involved, its pretty mild.  If your cornea gets infected, you may have some blurred vision for a while.  The only way to get the correct diagnosis, however, is to be seen by a doctor, and examined with a slit-lamp microscope.

Treatment involves some antibiotic eyedrops, with a steroid to reduce inflammation, and some ointment for lubrication when you sleep.

'Ta daeng' is all over the place - just the luck of the draw whether you get it or not.

If you speak Thai, people will ask you "Bpen arai gup ta?", to which you can answer "Ta bpen sammi yai" - a funny joke...which someone here can translate, if you don't speak Thai.

Just for the archive if somebody is searching in some month after this in case of own trouble...

Went to Bumrungrad at 7:50 am this morning, very professional, good organisation. The hospital is something for the fetish guys (if you like nice TGs in white dresses...). Girl at reception asked me if I want to be seated in a wheel chair... so if you're into something like this THAT is your choice.

Seen Doctor after 20 minutes, good equipment, gave me explanation, simply an allergy. Had luck. Came out, receipt and report for health insurance after some minutes, pharmacy prepared in the meantime my pills. 1200 Baht, think a little bit too expensive, but I I don't care because the health insurance will pay.

Finished before 8:30am.

In the meantime seeing again on both eyes.

@haam sup: in Germany we have a word:
"Wer den Schaden hat,
braucht für den Spott nicht zu sorgen"
which someone here can translate if you don't speak German.  But yours was a good one. Peace. *g*

I contracted conjunctivitis too after a stay in Thailand last year and it was VERY difficult to remove. My Ophtalmologist had to try half a dozen of antibiotica before eradicating it. Total treatment time was 3 months!

Interesting: some postings in this forum link it to chlamydia, suggesting that you can get chlamydia in the eye from eating a girl's pussy ! I cannot rule that out for me, even it sounds quite astonishning.
For me, the ophtalmologist tried antibiotica 1 by 1 and she never ordered analysis of the bacteria, so I still don't know what sort it was exactly.
