Sex workers return hurt and confused - Women rescued from Bahrain put in hospital

Four Thai women recently rescued from brothels in Bahrain arrived in Bangkok yesterday with clear signs of physical and mental distress. Three of the women were hospitalised upon their return. One has broken legs from jumping from the fourth floor of her apartment building in a bid to escape.
And another of the four, identified only as Iew, seemed to be suffering from some form of mental disorder. The 30-year-old from Nong Bua Lam Phu province appeared disoriented on her arrival.
Former nurse Julaipen Roongroj came from Nong Bua Lam Phu to pick up her sister-in-law Iew at Suvarnabhumi airport yesterday. The sight and condition of Iew left her completely shocked.
Eight months ago Iew left her one-year-old daughter with Mrs Julaipen and said she would leave for a job in Bahrain to raise money to help her debt-ridden parents and elder brother.
Initially Iew was normal, said Mrs Julaipen. She phoned home every month to speak with her child and relatives and promised to rescue her family financially. She twice sent 100,000 baht for her family.
However, Mrs Julaipen said Iew had changed over the past few months. She often spoke confusingly, began scolding her parents and claimed to be a medium, Mrs Julaipen said.
Iew spoke of her life and mind at the airport yesterday. ''They took all the money and gave me what was enough for daily needs. If I asked for more, they said I was a big spender,'' she said.
''In Bahrain Arabs were afraid of me because I have the body of a grandpa. I was an old man but sometimes a girl. Sometimes I felt hot all day long and had to drink all the time.
''I have visions of lottery results. You can take numbers for the next draw. Now, I come back to save the nation... I won't return to Bahrain. It's hell.''
Samaritan-cum-politician Paveena Hongsakula, who successfully coordinated the women's return, said yesterday that the government would arrange for mental and vocational rehabilitation for the victims and grant each woman 15,000 baht to help them start a new life.
Mrs Paveena said her foundation took the women to file legal complaints with police to prosecute their procurer.
A large number of Thai women have entered the sex trade in Bahrain and over 200 are sent home every year, costing the state some 20 million baht annually.

Bahrain plans ban on liquor, female singers

An Internet report has ranked Manama among the top ten vice cities in the world, the daily notes.
Bahrain's culture and information minister has ordered one and two-star hotels to close down their bars and discos, a Gulf News report says.
Sheikha Mai Bint Mohammad Al Khalifa has also asked hotels in the oil kingdom not to sell liquor and to ban female singers from performing in their halls and restaurants.
It's a typically wolly middle east anouncment but it would seem that it's only the lower end establishments being affected at present.

Bahrain MPs vote for blanket ban on alcohol sales
MPs in Bahrain have voted in favour of a blanket ban on public sales of alcohol at Bahrain's hotels, restaurants, clubs and off-licences.
Under the proposal, hotel guests would be allowed alcohol only in their rooms while consumption in private homes would continue to be allowed, with suppliers providing home delivery.
MPs had already voted earlier to ban alcohol sales at Bahrain International Airport, including in the duty free shops and on Gulf Air flights, Gulf Daily News reported on Wednesday.
The proposal must now go to the government's Cabinet, which has the power to reject it.
Hotel and restaurant operators in Bahrain, quoted by the paper, said that any blanket ban could have a detrimental impact on the economy.

If this goes ahead this could have a big impact on the weekend trade from Saudi and disrupt the supply/demand curve for mongers.

I don't reckon they will ban alcohol otherwise they would lose half of all their revenue.
Bahrain without girls and booze doesnt add up to much of a weekend escape for the Saudis and sundry expats.
Dubai would benefit no doubt.
As for girls in Bahrain It was always a smorgasboard when I worked in Saudi up until 2005.
Many places with many girls like Tylos Hotel, Phoenica, Sea Shell, AL Bustan Hotel, Wranglers and the other one near wranglers forget the name etc too many to recall but maybe Bahrain aint as good as it used to be.

It's not a real democracy so the rulers will probably overturn the MP's vote. Any real democracy in any gulf states will probably lead to an ban IMHO.

Most of the Bahranis I have talked to are unconfortable with the Saudi hoards who decend on the weekend while admiting they do bring in a lot of cash.

Bahrain revisited.
The Shooter spent 3 days in Bahrain this week. Stayed in Juffair as usual, but did not attend the usual haunts in that area.
