Thanks for the info guys...

Thanks for the information about 7/11. I may give them a look and try them. Here in the U.S., though, the items sold in a 7/11 are significiantly more expensive than at a grocery store, you only tend to buy in them when you're on the road or are really stupid teenager with no idea of the value of money. Grin. So, I especially appreciate the info about Boots, Watson, Villa and Foodland. I will be sure to look on the map before leaving on the trip, and find some of those before hand.

And no worries mates, I WILL be trying the food of Thailand. I just want Ice Cream a few times, since basically I go about once a year between my ice cream otherwise. Grin. It has been at least 20 years since I have been to a Swenson! I honestly thought they went out of business. I am SO going to one when I am at Bangkok. Never heard of Buds before, but will give them a try.

I plan to try the street food in a major way, but yeah I can see where eating ice cream from the street is a poor idea. Stick with only food that is cooked with enough temperature to kill bacteria.

Some time soon I am going to start and make a newbie guide based on these 14 (!!!) pages of tips from you folks, as well as a few things I got from other links. This way, by organizing and typing it in, I won't forget it and hopefully come back from Thailand with a few bucks left and Happy, instead of either A) poor long before the plane back or B) with some money but pissed at a waste of a vacation. Grin.

I also avoid fried food from street vendors, as cooking oil is likely to be reused. Never had a problem with grilled chicken, pork, or seafood, fresh fruit, corn on the cob, and noodles. Never tried the bugs, just my personal preference. Another good place for cheap local food is in the department stores, all seem to have food courts in the basement (some on the top floor), you may be more comfortable in the air conditioned environment, I know I am.

Grilled food is fine, chicken on sticks, or chicken pieces from the grill, as well as the world famous Nana Burger (though not as good as 'original', but still good). Schwarma, etc.... are all fine.

Always better earlier in the day.

DO NOT eat any squid, particularly not dried squid, no matter what time of day.

Only eat peelable fruit from street vendors, and only when it's peeled in front of you.

Just basic safety measures.

You can also do what I did on my first trip - take a trip's worth of antibiotics, take them every day. While you will be impervious to pretty much *any* bacterial infections, there are concerns - sensitivity to sunlight, as well as in some cases (cipro) possibility of snapping the achilles tendon under normal strain.

I also second the recommendation for food courts in department stores - you can't go wrong. You usually buy a booklet of coupons at the entrance, and pay with the coupons (they refund your unused portion).

It's great food.

If you had enough money, you could bring along your own personal physician, but it really isn't necessary.

Just use good common sense.

Don't eat brown salad or green meat.

Just got back from Terminal 21 (Soi 21 and Sukhumvit) and the food court on the 5th floor is new, clean and cheap prices 25-45 baht a meal and no worries about iffy street food,

Not sure how late it stays open....

You want ice cream then you are going to have a blast. Any Thai girl loves to go to Swensen's ice cream. It is the top ice cream place to go, and they are everywhere. They are not expensive either for what you get. Most things on the menu are under $2.

There was a new health food safety program started 4 years ago that greatly improved the street food cleanliness standards. You will now see vendors using soap to clean dirty dishes with, and you will see many of them using disposable plastic gloves, or other means of not touching your food directly when they serve it.

The biggest problem remaining is not knowing that your food HAS to be cooked if it has been sitting there. They know this, but many tourists do not, and just buy food that looks cooked without having it reheated, and cooked in front of them. You watch, and most Thais make sure the food they buy is reheated at the very least.

The cleanliness level of street food has greatly improved in the last few years, even the block ice cream the street vendors sell on a stick is good to eat now. You will see them use a piece of wax paper to grab it with so they do not touch it while they put it on the stick for you. A few years ago they would just grab it with their hand leaving finger prints in it....lolol.

Try the Durian ice cream from the street vendors. My girlfriend loves it. Durian is a fruit you have to try at least once. There is no discribing the taste. It is something you have to try just so you can say you had some Durian. Quite a few people love it, and then quite a few people hate it. Like most things Thai, there is no middle ground....lolol.

On soi 17 on Sukhumvit there is a Robinson's department store with a Tops food market below. You can get pretty much everything you need there during the day. There is even a good food court next to the market, with an MK restaurant in the corner.

If you want to take a Thai girl to dinner, and she will typically say where ever you want to go when you ask her, take her to MK. She will not expect you to know about MK, and she will love you even more. Let her order, and fix your food for you. It is on the hot pot style of food.

There is even a very good money changing booth, with a window either outside, or inside at Robinson's. Then McDonalds is right next to it, with 24 hour bathrooms. Just something to keep in mind in that area.

NANA burger is OK, and something you will want to try while sitting at Big Dogs watching all the goings on in the front of NANA Plaza. Drinks there are cheap, and if you get the NANA burger girl's attention she will deliver to you sitting there. I do have pictures when it was just a grill, and not the present cart with canopy. She used to do her prep work at the ATM machine step right behind her settup....lolol.

You can stay on till 10, but most stalls will close around 9:30. I was there a couple of weeks back at that time.

For ice cream, Swensen's or Ete will do just fine. Haagen Daz, marble slab creamery, and cold stone are here too but they are more expensive. For the first time I eat ice cream here, it taste diff. for me..guess b/c the milk flavor here. Oh, Dairy Queen (DQ) is here too.

Alot people suggest food court, then you have to check out the one at Paragon (Siam BTS) and its whole floor of food there..then its Gourmet Market (grocery store). Recently, I like Food Loft (another food court type) at Central Chitlom (Chitlom BTS) on 7th floor.

If you like beef/steak, then eat before you come here...then dont eat beef here..then eat again when you get back.
