I wouldn't recommend going for anything over 18 carat gold content.

9 carat gold is too hard and adulterated.

Anything over 18 carat gold is far too soft and maleable.
It will be distorted in shape easily and very quickly wear away to a fraction of its original weight.

The idea of pure gold is attractive, but highly impractical if it is to be worn every day, scratched, bent, washed, rubbed and vulnerable to abrasions, if the thought is to commemorate a special occasion and the intention is that it should last over time.

Just my carrot's worth.

OK, yeah. 18k is not what I am looking for. Thailand has centuries old tradition of 23k gold. zit is treated as currency and can be redeemed for only a small loss. Folks have had their chains increase significantly in value as the price of gold goes up. 18k is treated with disdain. It's all about 23k.

The traditional square barrel link in 23k in Thailand is huge and quite substantial, esp in the 5 baht size. I have no fear of breakages or wearing away to nothing. Being too soft is really an old wives tale. The little bit of bronze and silver added give it more strength than most realize.

Anyway, I have found an importer who ships from the US. I will pay a premium because of 8% duty, credit card processing, shipping from Thailand plus A TIDY PROFIT for the fellow and his wife.

It is techniquely illegal to export 23k Thai baht gold for resale. That is why there are almost no dealers on the web.

I was hoping someone knew of someone reliable. So far, I just have found one company that looks on the up and up.

My post was in response to the guys who were talking about purchasing gold for their eives or daughters to wear.

It was in no way a reference to trading in gold.

As for "a little bit of bronze and silver added, you then don't have pure gold.

23 carat, Standard Thai issue is 96.5 % gold. Yes somewhat soft but never a problem for necklaces etc.
Definately would NOT buy 23 carat for rings etc.

Now if I can just get someone to by me a toonne or so??

96.5% is close enough to pure gold for me. You would be surprised what nice pieces can be done for women in 23K gold. Delicate, yes, but quite beautiful. I gave a set of dangly earings that were incredible. I don't think she wore any others for months.

Rings I hear take a real beating. Best in 18K. Nothing wrong with 18K. It is 75% gold. But 23k heavy duty 5 baht chains... There is nothing like them.

I didn't have the money while I was in LOS. Looks like I will pay thru the nose now. About 25% higher thru mail. That's life...

If ones wife of daughter is Thai then I would not bother buying them anything but "Thai gold" = 23K stuff. Most likely they will turn their noses up at anything else. Even 18K does not have the same color as 23K and therefore if they wear it everyone will think all they could afford was the cheap stuff. To most Thai’s if it ain’t 23K it ain’t gold.

yes, IBFarang, I have heard exactly the same thing.

I am pretty stoked about getting a square link 5 baht chain in 23K. I have no real gold jewelry except for a tiny 18k chain that used to belong to my father.

I do LIKE gold. I just dont have any to speak of. I figured I would get a single nice piece. And I better do it now before gold takes another massive jump in price.

I am just pretty upset I have to pay a 750 dollar premium to buy the chain out of the country. It's cheaper than a ticket, I suppose....

picture of a 6baht chain (little too big). I hope the 5 baht is not too oversized. I am a big guy 6, 4"', so I do need some size to the links. Is 5 baht a nice size? I am thinking 22 inches long.

Hi gents,
I want to have a white gold 'letter' pendant with a decent chain made for my TGF...does not wear yellow gold, just silver, but I am not too fussed on silver.
Anyway, I could have it made up in OZ, but maybe I'd do better in LOS.
Anyone had experience with white gold in LOS & can help me out on price, quality, decent jeweller? Maybe I'm better off having it done in OZ?
Much Appreciated,
Liam

Anything other than 23K yellow gold is better bought somewhere else I would imagine. Thais are not big on white gold or lesser carat gold. To them WG looks too much like polished stainless steel. Me too actually.
