I was surprised to see Joe Wood's response on gold in Thailand since he seems to know a lot about Thai culture, but that what this forum is for an exchange of infomation and others have set it straight. For Thai's it is 23K or nothing at all.

I'm sure buying the stuff won't be a problem. Some good recommendations on where to look.
BUT, the one thing no one is mentioning is price.
I know this must be open to wild fluctuation. Where is the best place to find out roughly what you should be paying on a particular day?

That's easy. The daily price of gold is posted outside of every gold shop. Bring your calculator. Reputable shops in Chinatown, (Yarawot Road) will not cheat you.
As an update, I ended up buying a 3 Baht 6 strand rope chain with two dragon's heads on Ebay for scrap value of gold. Nobody knew what it was and no one bid against me.
I wish it were 6 or 10 baht, but I was happy to find it. Really nice piece authenticated by my personal jeweler as 23K gold. It bears the 96.5 Thai stamp as well.
I had a 22k Buddha amulet custom made in Thailand and shipped to me. Now I get chastised firmly if I show up in any local Thai restaurants with out it.
I have to admit. There is nothing like 23K gold. Nice.

I have an 8 baht necklace, rarely wear it anymore as on more than one occanssion I have had it nearly rippe doff my neck. It is at the point it sits in my safe more often than on my neck. But I agree, 23k is the way to go, but the current envirement in thailand does not lend itself well to letting people see you wearing it..... and in the village, even more so.... I hav ewritten before about the upswing in crime ithe villages.... yaba, food, booze... it all adds up to desperate people.....

Mmm. Too bad.
I'm 6'6" and full of muscle (no I am not from Brussels, LOL).
I don't drink and am constantly, keenly aware of my surroundings. I walk extremely fast with a purpose. Never stroll. Sorry, even with my TGF.
I JUST walk that way everywhere in the world. Even in so called safe places in the USA.
Given that, I have yet ever had to fend off an attack/robbery even in some fairly dangerous places in Eastern Europe.
That isnt to say I have made a turn or crossed a street when I had a bad feeling about something. Must be working.
I would not wear jewelry in Brazil, but the day I feel threatened in Thailand is the day I leave and never come back.
Fortunately thieves and ner do wells give me a wide berth and prey on greener pastures. Most of them couldn't reach up so far anyways....
Being big is one thing. But coupled with sobriety and total awareness seems to be a winning combo.

I don't think I could bare being around some of the major wanker farangs in the go-go's if I weren't drunk. I have to have beer goggles on just to watch the old cvnts make fools of themsevles without actually laughing out loud.
I saw somewhere that the rallies and the state of emergency in BKK has driven down the tourist numbers by near 90% - all I gots to say is - thanks.

if this thing stretches out past the first of the year, I would think a whole lot of bars will be hurting.... to lose a high season to this sillyness......
Although the more experienced mongers will still arrive for holiday, a lot of others will stay away if protests continue.
Add to that the slowdown in the worldwide economy and suddenly us regular mongers will have a lot more to choose from.....
