Gold in the San Francisco Bay Area, found in Vietnamese gold shops, is 99.9999% pure, i.e. 24 karat. It typically sells for about 6% or 7% over spot price. I just checked most recently last week. Spot price was $745 per troy oz, and shop was selling it for $790 per troy ounce.
Also, the softness of gold is exagerated and perpetuated by the vendors of 14 & 18 karat gold - they'll always tell you that pure gold is too soft.
I have worn a 64 gram necklace of 24 karat gold for the last 8 years, and I have only taken it off 4 times for professional cleaning. I've had it appraised twice for it's purity. It has not lost a single gram in weight in spite of rubbing against my chest and shirt all these years, and the design is still crisp and sharp. It has some miniscule scratches, but not really noticeable.
