Well, think nobody ever complained about my command of
English (or Thai, Dutch and German).
The difference between you and me is that you're a native speaker and I am not. If your education had been enough you would have understand that your above creation makes you like a fool....
This sentence has only 14 words but you manage to make numerous mistakes both in spelling and grammar:
- 'for' should start with a capital
- 'some one' should be one word
- 'whom' should be 'who'
- 'Thinks' should start with a lower case letter
- 'he' is unnecessary
- 'Good' should start with a lower case letter
- 'Command' should start with a lower case letter
- 'your' should be 'you are' or 'you're'
8 mistakes in a 14 word sentence... I rest my case, your Honor!

First of all, I'd like to mention that I made a slight omission earlier: the name of the Province of Phrae has a ror reua in it. I forgot while I was busy being astonished at the totally erroneous comment that the vowel for Pi (ghost) and Phae were the same.
Unfortunately, that was not the only erroneous comment made here.
Now... for you others that are armed with nothing more than vague sounds you hear Thais making and perhaps a tourist's phrasebook...
I can't believe that there is any argument over this. Many people simply only hear Thai in bits and pieces, and they have no idea how to read it or how it is spoken. And they think they are on the same footing as someone who has spent years of effort studying the language with native Thai professors of the language, and who speaks it every damn day with Thais of every social level...
Hence, the absurd comments here.
DrLove is correct in the meaning of 'pi bah'. Minder, I think you made an honest mistake, not being familiar with the colloquial (especially North and North-Eastern) expression. Local, I think you just forgot about this 'pi bah' expression, though I'm sure you have heard it many times.
The rest of you are just being ornery.
Jingjo... yes, you do hear the word 'pi' a lot as you use it in your post. And yes that word does mean 'older sibling.' But that is not what was said. Do you think Beretta's girlfriend normally calls him 'pi'? Obviously not, or he wouldn't have had to ask us in this thread what was going on. He would have found out long ago. So why should she suddenly start calling him older brother now? She probably wouldn't call him 'pi' anyway unless they spoke Thai together all the time... even then...
That word is spelled with phor phahn.
'Pi' meaning 'ghost' is spelled with phor phoong.
It is a different word that may sound the same to your ears, if you don't understand the tonal difference and aren't able to hear it
... after years of practice, I may point out.
And that is besides the contextual difference...
Gentleman, this is the third time I have explained to you that the expression 'pi bah' is a common colloquial North and North-Eastern expression which means 'one mad as if possessed by ghosts'.
That is what beretta's girlfriend called him. You disagree, I am sorry to say, because you are simply ignorant both of the spelling of Thai and of the common usages and idiomatic expressions that form conversational Thai.
If this sounds arrogant, I can only apologize, but it astonishes me that people would disagree over such a simple item of language, when they have no reason to whatsoever, except an unclear comprehension, and a vague desire to express themselves... nonsensically and arrogantly...
much like pi bah.

You're right, atl. It can be used jokingly or not.
Pi in this case is different from pi as in elder because it is a totally different word with different spelling and different tone.
It just sounds the same to people who can't hear the tone or don't know the spelling. Not knowing the expression could also confuse people.

When I am driving the family between Pattaya and near Udorn, I hear the phrase "pi-pi" quite often.
I am usually asked to stop at rest stops shortly after this phrase is used.
Can anybody explain what this means?

Well seajohn I did check my intial thoughts with my wife,, BORN Thai, University educated and obviously far superior with the language in question than you are. A double check was put through my Mother-in-law 64 years of Thai and Laos spoken everyday,, maybe you need to open a school to teach her how to speak THAI,, ROFLMAO,,  >
It may well be the spelling I used that is "IN YOUR opinion" incorrect. Surely the transliteration of Thai sounds into the English writing IS INDEED open to a matter of opinion ( your wrong again on that). As evidence I put forward the road / suburb signage in BKK,, one can travel several kilometers and see the same town/suburb transliterated into English in many different spellings. Another fine example is the passports of my wife, Mother-in-law and Father-in-law. Three completely different spellings ROFLMAO but your arrogance suggests this is impossible.
Please place your supposedly superior knowledge, along with your agressive arrogance ito a bottle and double cap same.
This is an open forum where things are discussed amongst members, no need for anyone to shut their mouths just becauase you say so.
