A cheer guest is simply a literal translation of what the locals call mamasans in massage parlours. The papasan term is rarely used (except perhaps by foreigners or tour guides).
Their job from the customer standpoint is to help you pick a girl.
From the MP standpoint, their job is to make sure the girls all get a fair share of work (and so there isn't a line of 20 guys all standing around waiting to get at one girl). ;)
They make about 80-120 Baht commission per round + tips. Easy money (try doing the math). Usually a long waiting list to get these jobs. And as with easy money, they usually don't know how to keep it either (same as the girls).

Packripper, Thanks you have been very informative. Another question, because their job is to make sure all girls get their fair share, how good is their advice in general? Is it customary to tip cheer? If so should you do it before selection of girl? So cheer will give you unbaised advice. Thanks!!!!

Well, if you're not a regular with a particular cheer guest, I'd say you should take his/her advise at face value/with a grain of salt. I always tip my cheer guests as soon as I pay (and I always pay before hand). If you want to pay afterwards, it's best to tip them before you go up, as you may or may not run into them later. Again, unless you're going back again and again..... probably not necessary to tip. They do try a bit harder if you do though (but don't expect them to do backflips). I like for my cheer guests to call me when new girls get there... pretty much the only reason why I keep them on my tip list.
