LOL. Just making that comment says more about that says more about "your" people than about the others. Would you be from the same place where scientists spent millions of US$ to send a probe to Mars, just to have it go bust because they didn't know how to convert from metric to imperial? LOL.

They know how to convert, they just don't always know when. Contrary to popular belief, the metric system is in wide spread use in the US, it is just not in exclusive use, and confusion can occur.

But seriously, does the average person in countries that exclusively use the metric system really understand fractions very well? Does the average Thai person know that 1/4 (or one-quarter) kilo is 250 grams? Does the average European know that?

I would say they know more than the average Burmese or Liberian, who still use imperial like the USAns. But just ask your neighbors up north. Does the average Canadian know what 1/4 is?

Despite legislation by the Canada government. their citizens watch a significant amount of American TV shows and read American books, magazines, newspapers, etc, so they know. I was asking about the average person in non-English speaking countries in EU and Asia.

I thought Canadians were French speaking.

BTW, just so that you have an idea of what the answer to your question may be: fractions make more sense in metric system than in imperial. Using fractions in imperial is a perversion of the system into metric. LOL.

Yes, I heard that most Canadians can speak a version of French. In fact, you cannot get a job working for the government in that country unkess you are fluent in French.

Strange, because I have never met a Canadian in Phuket who can speak French with me.

C'est probablement parcequ'ils ont l'impression de parler français.

Le Quebecquois c'est comme une vache Belge essayant de parler l'Espagnol en se servant d'un dictionaire Chinois - une atrocité!

No, only the ones who want to secede and form their own nation are French speaking (plus those with government jobs as someone pointed out). Of course, with the liberal Canadian immigration policy, a lot of people don't speak English or French.

I disagree about the metric system and fractions, unless you are talking 1/10, 1/100. 1/1000 etc.

In the imperial system, the normal way to sub-divide an inch is with a fraction such as 1/2, 1/4, 1/8. 1/16, etc. Wrenches and other tools come in fractions. With the metric system, stuff is only subdivided by a factor of 10 (because most humans have 10 fingers).
