Quote: from Wanderingsam on 7:18 pm on Sep. 7, 2009 Anyone had a reuben lately? Or a half one also known as.5?
... yeah... I did the Landmark's reuben... considering how far BKK is from the reuben's ancesteral roots, I concede that it exceeded my expectations... a shadow of the New York spectacle reubens, but worthwhile in a pinch. ... a good sized meal, served with fries, and a pretty good value for THB 250... bread lacked sufficient rye-ness to have that distinctive rye flavor... the corned beef was quite lean and thinly sliced, but unsurprisingly, not a particularly high quality meat... the sauer kraut was nicely done, but I prefer a bit more vinegary bite to it... and the mustard was just not kosher, so to speak. ... still, this will hold you until you can get home to the real stuff... sort of like the hamburgers you order at a 5-star hotel in some 3rd world country... just a bit more than a placebo, but enough to get you though the night.

The reuben at Larry's Dive is pretty good. At least it was last time I tried which must be about a year ago.

The Reuben at Dukes in Chiang Mai is superb. Not tried their Bangkok branch at Emporium but believe they have it on the menu.

... Harry... I did the reuben at Duke's at Emporium... get a grip man... the by-line for this thread is "The Classic Reuben." ... what Duke's serves ain't that... the bread was a ciabatta... tasty, but not rye... the saurkraut was soggy (almost mush) and tasteless... the pastrami was as expected, this far from a proper NY Jewish deli... not an uncommon problem for authentic ingredients this far down the logistics chain. ... the result was a mutant reuben... if made with fresh ingredients, it might have been an interesting sandwich, as a mutant reuben mind you... but unfortunately, it wasn't.

Yeah Magnum..... I did say some 500 miles to the North of Emporium - which I have never tried BTW. The owner in CM, David, is an American chef who does the best he can IMO given the need to use primarily local ingredients. You should fly up & try one it sounds better than the Emporium edition.

eat at dukes emporium and was not impressed. had a regular cheeseburger. patty was to thin and dry, coleslaw was tasteless, cheese was just to little but fries and bun were good. service was great. price incl. a can of coke was 245 baht. I will be back for the ribs. they looked delicious, so did the pizza (american style). rtb

... I stand corrected... sorry. ... and yes, I will try Duke's of Chiang Mai's reuben sandwich when I am next there... there are a few noteworthy farang joints up there I try not to miss... Love At First Bite, Miguel's Cafe, a killer bakery whose name I cannot recall, and Mike's Burgers (okay, OKAY!... I KNOW IT!... but... I have a need for a hyper-greasy gut-buster burger every year or so to stress test my lower intestines, liver, lumbago). ... beware, though, that Duke's Emporium's reuben is more of a "reuben-ish" sandwich... maybe a fusion offering by design, or maybe the farther the kitchen is from the boss, the "mice will play."

It must have changed (and for the worse). I was in the area today and decide to try Larry's Reuben. Mistake - whatever it was, it wasn't a Reuben. A Reuben is what you get at 2nd Avenue Deli (lower mid-town) or the Stage/Carnegie (mid-town) Manhattan. A reasonable facsimile is what you can get at Max's on Union Square in San Francisco. And, French's mustard? OMG All this, and 295 + 7% VAT added. Much better ways to spend your baht, IMO. Oh, as to "American Pizza", I always think of the deep dish pizza as "Chicago Style" and the thin crust as "New York Style". I guess we could have a good old debate on pizza styles.
