I have been to both in the last 2 months at least 4 times. For the pleasurs of the body phuket can not even come close to Pattaya.

For relaxing and chilling and looking at some great beaches then Pattaya can not even hold a light to phuket.

Hope this helps

Who's buying the beers

IMHO...
Transport around Phuket is damn expensive, around Pattaya damn cheap.

Pattaya has great gogo bars and great beer bars - Phuket has some great beer bars and its gogo bars have been a bad joke for several years.

You can get a bed, a drink and a woman cheaper in Pattaya than you can in Phuket. However, when you wake up and look out the window in the daylight you would rather see Phuket than Pattaya.

If all you plan to do is eat drink and party then its Pattaya. If you want a tropical holiday with the bonus of Thailands night life, then its Phuket. Enjoy.

i will be returning to Phuket next Month and I have never had any thoughts of not going there.
i agree with Basher and his comments about another disaster.
it may happen again but more then likely not, what happened last Year was a one in a lifetime event (hopefully).
there has been so much scaremongering about how Phuket has disappeared and the Island is dead......what a load of shit.

DG is entitled to his view as we all our but I think he looks from afar and knows nothing of what has happened in the Months following the Tsunami.
i don't really know the full story but do keep in touch with friends in Patong and know a little of the situation now.

never been to Pattaya and have no wish,Phuket is my playground.
Patong will be quiet for my visit and that I like as I will not have to fight for a Girl, instead they will be fighting over me.
i've always found the Nightlife in Patong pretty vibrant but we all like different things.
you make what you make of it and I certainly know where to go to have a good time.

looking forward to my visit and having fun during Hours of Daylight and Darkness.

Let me remind you that ""the once in a lifetime event"" reoccurred less than 90 days later...The offical explanation as to why it didnt trigger another tsumani was that it ''simply happened in more shallow water unlike the first quake.."'which was ungraded to 9.3 recently, making it the 2nd strongest recorded. The quake in march was 8.7.....scientist say strong enough in deeper water to triggered another. Right now on that fault line volcanos are active. The science community believe its likely a powerful, or more powerful quake will come....just not sure when. As for the other stuff. I hear the police are fining on minor things there. And its way f***ing hotter than here pattaya. "'unbearable"' was the word used to discribe it.. "'expensive"' by comparassion"' another. But sure each to his own.

I'm currently in Phuket: Weather lovely, water a bueatiful aqua marine, almost no damage visible, no ghosts, and nobody here! Deals to be had!

On Bangla last night noticed a tout hawking/showing vedio of bloatted tsuinamii corpses with bloated genitilia, anything to make a baht. Karma, maybe in his next life.

The area is really hurting for the lack of tourists.

Hi DG.
as you say each to his own and I agree with that.

here in the UK many people have been scared off from going to Phuket because of many inaccurate Media reports.
they think the Island has been totally devasted and that it will take Years for a recovery.
a lot of the Media coverage was very sensational but a lot of lies were also told.

showing a friend of mine some Photo's of Patong taken Hours after the Tsunami and then Photo's taken each Week showing how quickly things had improved.
someone walked past and had a look and said anyone thinking of going to Thailand needed their head tested and I was stupid for even thinking of going.
hadn't I heard of the bodies still laying in the gutters 5 Months after the event, with no attempt to take them away?
people just step over them each Day.
hadn't I heard of the huge Typhoid epidemic which is now killing Thousands each Week?
hadn't I heard that 95% of ALL Hotels had been destroyed and the remaining ones had raised their prices by 500%?
and all this from someone who has never visited Thailand and gleamed all her info from the Media and chit-chat with friends.
she even made a statement that she had heard that all the Major Airlines had stopped using Bangkok as a destination because the Tsunami had washed away DM Airport.

all I know is from People I hear from who live there,People who have visited.
i know things will not be the same as when I last visited but there have been many changes anyway, some for the better and some not.
i have only ever spent 81 Days on Phuket and walked on the Beach twice and only ever walked down Beach Road 3 times.
not my area of play so will not affect me and my regular haunts are still up and running.

yes there may be another disaster in the future for that area of the World but thankfully Thailand escaped relatively light compared to other Countries.
how many Years have the scaremongers been telling the World that California will soon disappear when the 'big one' comes?

any loss of life is a tragedy and I feel for everyone who died but life must go on.
any Tourist Bhat spent trying to help the Phuket economy get back on it's feet is a Baht well spent.

to no-one in particular.

if the Police are cracking down in Patong then they will have to make a few rules for me.
maybe fining me for being a little unsteady on my feet after a Night out.
or how about for me having the cheek to walk down the road and degrade the Girls by holding their hands.
or the worst sin of all........falling asleep in a Bar after too many Beers, this is a terrible one which must really offend.
i should not be asleep because I should be spending my Baht and should be punished accordingly.
i stay in Patong,do not hire Cars or Motorbikes so I should be safe from all the little scams they pull.

i do not know wether it is hotter or more expensive in Phuket than other places.
but I like it hot so no problem there and anything I buy in Patong is still cheaper for the same thing in the UK.

the quieter the better for me,i would rather walk into a Bar and have 10 Girls trying to get my attention then have to struggle against the other Tourists and losing out on that 'special Lady'.

it may be quiet but i'm sure I will find at least 1 Girl in every Bar.

does anyone know if Cobra Gold is hitting Phuket next Month?

I am looking at buying some property in Phuket & I see no evidence of this fact in the real estate prices!!

p.s. I note your 'give it time' caveat but I disagree.

Guys thanks for your input so far.

While considering either to go to Phuket again or Pattaya, I should underline that I am not afraid of any other disaster what eventually could happen, nor ghost will keep me away from paradise.
That is not the reason at all while I am considering wether to go to Phuket or Pattaya. The fact is that I go to Phuket to have a relaxing day on the beach or do a nice outer island daytrip while at night I usually come to life. Always I travel individually and I enjoy it that way. BUT I can't have a lot of fun in an empty disco. The bars are fine for pre-party and chat with some cutie. After midnight however, I like to let the world rocks under my feet and have a good time at a bouncing club.
In the past, I usually spent nights at Banana, Tiger and recently I found my way into Tai Pan (because lack of other venues in january 2005). I was wondering if any of this places or busy again yet. I just like to mingle between a crowd.
I live countryside just by myself and here the rest of the year, life is damn quiet.
Never been to Safari...is it true that this is still a great venue post 2.00am these days?

Last december I returned to Pattaya for the first time ever since about 8 years. 3 days later I was back in Phuket, although I had a reasonable good time in Pattaya. I just missed all the fun of good 'ol Patong before, rocking through the night. And surely miss the days, a few years ago when Soi sunset was a cluster of great venues open untill sunrise. But that was the past.

What puts me in a dillema to choose...

I like Phuket because of its general atmosphere. It is perhaps that island-feeling that Pattaya can not give me.

Pattaya advantages...
1/Pattaya rocks by night, that is I am sure of.
2/Plenty of "availibility" to choose from.
3/Close to Bangkok = save that ticket

Phuket advantages...
1/familiar with the island.
2/Knowing quite a number of locals.
3/Good daytime activities
4/To know that I could help people buildinig up paradise again is great of course.

5/Oh yeah, last january when I was in Tai Pan, I was the lucky winner of a 3000 bath cheque worht to spend on drinks in one single night. It is not expired yet !
Maybe I should go to spend it.

Regards to all...

Eddy

no doubts you'll have much fun now in Tiger and in Tai Pan.
I was there three weeks ago and it rocks after midnight!
Crowds're big enough, but not that overcrowded.
