Report from Bangkok Post dated 17 October 2011 :-

Capital declared safe - Water runoff from North flows past city
========================================

Bangkok is safe, with the much-feared mass of water runoff from the North having moved past the capital, flood prevention agencies say.

The overall flood problem shows signs of easing, the government's flood relief centre announced yesterday. Most parts of Bangkok would definitely not be flooded, it added.

Some low-lying areas to the east of the capital which are outside of flood protective barriers may experience rising water, but the flooding is being contained, says the Royal Irrigation Department.

Affected areas include Klong Sam Wa, Lat Krabang, Min Buri and Nong Chok districts.

But for the rest of Bangkok, residents could rest assured.

The biggest bulk of accumulated water from upstream provinces had flowed past the capital and emptied into the sea, said Agriculture and Cooperatives Minister Theera Wongsamut

He said the RID had forecast the mass of water would reach Bangkok on the weekend.

At its peak on Saturday, the water level of the Chao Phraya River measured 2.29 metres, one centimetre below what the RID had predicted, at the Memorial Bridge.

Flood water in other provinces will stabilise and gradually recede, he said.

"I can confirm that the biggest water mass is behind us now," Mr Theera said, adding that the Chao Phraya River would not burst through flood walls protecting Bangkok.

Yongsak Kongmak, of the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration, said flooding within flood-protected localities of Bangkok was the result of collected rainwater, not the northern water run-off.

Bangkok has high-capacity sluice gates to control the ebb and flow of water during high tide.

The 6km flood barrier along Khlong Hok Wa Sailang, which serves as the main defence for northernmost districts of Don Muang and Sai Mai, has been rebuilt.

It was reported that the northern and eastern districts of Bangkok were particularly vulnerable to advancing water from Ayutthaya which has submerged communities and several industrial estates there.

RID chief Chalit Damrongsak said yesterday the worst was over. But he cautioned that even though the water mass had drained into the sea, the water would not instantly disappear.

This was because much of the water flooding the fields in some of Bangkok's surrounding provinces would slowly flow into the Chao Phraya River.

Authorities are watching water from the flood-crippled Rojana and Hi-Tech industrial estates, fearing that it might overflow onto the Friendship highway in Bang Pa-in district of Ayutthaya.

He thanked local residents for letting the RID divert excess water through sluice gates in Khlong Pad and Khlong Sib even though the operation subjected them to the nuisance of lingering flood waters.

By doing so, the water would be pushed into the sea through rivers and canals in the eastern provinces, averting Bangkok.

The RID will deploy more water pumps at the Chulalongkorn sluice gate, one of the crucial points of water management efforts.

A substantial amount of water will also be channelled through the nearby Chiang Rak Noi sluice gate.

Mr Chalit said the next high tide was expected towards the end of the month. Embankments of sand bags and barriers will be strengthened where necessary and he urged residents not to remove the bags in the belief that doing so would hasten drainage in their neighbourhoods.

Mr Theera, meanwhile, said major upstream dams such as the Bhumibol in Tak, Sirikit in Uttaradit and Pasak Jolasid in Lop Buri were discharging significantly less water, meaning no more flood water was being retained in the North that could threaten downstream provinces.

There are indications the water level and flow of the Chao Phraya River were stabilising in Nakhon Sawan, which is at the confluence of a number of waterways that form the Chao Phraya.

The agriculture minister added that the Chao Phraya River in Sing Buri, Ang Thong and Ayutthaya provinces was likely to begin receding in coming days.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra yesterday presided over the launch of 500 boats in Nonthaburi to help push water in the Chao Phraya River, the Bang Pakong River and Tha Chin River out into the sea.

7 districts of Bangkok now at risk

Seven districts of Bangkok are at risk of flooding and people in the areas should move their belongings to higher places, Bangkok Governor Sukhmbhand Paribatra warned via his Twitter website on Wednesday morning.

The seven districts are Lat Krabang, Nong Chok, Minburi, Klong Samwa, Kannayao, Saimai and Bangkhen.

MR Sukhumbhand said the flood water was heading down to these areas through the broken dyke at Khlong Rapipat. The water level could be higher than the floodwalls of the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration and inundate the districts.

Presumably you can still get Taxi from Suvarnabhumi to Suk areas without difficulty ? Where are people parking their cars if they have been affected by floods ? Are food supllies in shops/restaurants still ok in the central areas ?

In Europe we keep getting news reports that all should be ok, the Thai TV channel I've got is pretty hit and miss, but people on Twitter report really serious shit happening.

Would be very interested to hear what some of our members are experiencing.

Most of bangkok is dry as I type this, but this afternoon I went to the Tah Prachan market and it has 1 meter of water everywhere...
Only some dams made of sandbags are between the water and bangkok now, if any of it fail (some failed allready) then situation could deteriorate very very fast.

Report from Bangkok Post dated 19 October 2011 :-

Flood arrives in Bangkok
=================

City Hall has advised residents of over 200 households outside Bangkok's floodwalls along Khlong Hok Wa canal in Sai Mai district to evacuate to two temporary shelters on Wednesday

Bangkok Governor Sukhumbhand Paribatra issued his second warning on Wednesday.

He advised residents of those areas move to two shelters, at Sai Mai and Rittiyawannalai schools in Sai Mai district. The two shelters could accommodate 2,000 people.

The water in Khlong Rapheepat in neighbouring Pathum Thani province reached a critical level after another section of a dyke, about 200 metres, built along the canal was breached today, allowing the floodwater to pour into the area.

Soldiers based at Khlong Rapheepat asked canalside residents to urgently move to higher ground after more cracks were found on the earth dyke.

GMC trucks were sent to transport residents out of the area because the soldiers were finding it very difficult to repair the cracks.

This morning, MR Sukhumbhand warned via his Twitter website that seven districts of Bangkok are at risk of flooding and people in the areas should move their belongings to higher places.

The districts are Lat Krabang, Nong Chok, Minburi, Klong Samwa, Kannayao, Sai Mai and Bangkhen.

MR Sukhumbhand said the floodwater was heading down to these areas through the broken dyke at Khlong Rapipat. The water level could be higher than the floodwalls built by the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration and may inundate the districts.

He stressed that this warning was not a signal for an immediate evacuation as the water level would rise slowly and local residents would have about 24 hours for preparations.

The governor said the BMA would provide information about flood risk areas every three hours.

On Vibhavadi-Rangsit road, the traffic was very congested as floodwater continued rising.

The water level was about 20 centimetres and only one lane was left for motorists due to heavy flooding. The traffic queue started at Simum Muang market in Pathum Thani province, reports said this afternoon.

The reports said the water level on Vibhavadi-Rangsit road heading to Thammasat University's Rangsit campus had increased to 50 centimetres.

The other side of the road was also flooded and the traffic was building up quickly from Zeer Rangsit shopping centre to Phahon Yothin road.

Future Park Rangsit shut its doors on Wednesady and will remain closed on Thursday because of the flooding on the roads in front of one of Bangkok's biggest shopping malls.

The department store's public relations announced this afternoon that the closure may be extended depending on the situation.

People who have parked their vehicles at the store's car park are asked not to take them off during the closure. The free parking offer for customers who are flood victims is valid until Oct 31.

Big C and HomePro stores, which adjoin the mall, were still open.

In the neighbouring province of Nonthaburi, the flooding has reached a critical level, with all districts now inundated.

Nonthaburi governor Wichian Phuttiwinyu said all six districts were now flooded. Bang Bua Thong and Pakkret districts were the worst hit.

A huge amount of floodwater from neighbouring Ayutthaya and Pathum Thani provinces has been flowing into Nonthaburi since yesterday.

The governor urged flood-hit residents wanting state assistance to contact officials on the 1131 hotline, which will receive their complaints around the clock.

Mr Wichian asked callers not to give false information to the hotline because hoax calls would only hamper efforts to help flood victims. He urged residents not to panic about the flooding.

What amaze me is how slow people are to make themself ready
I seen one shoe shop in sonam luang, still open with 20 cm of water in the shop. Do you think they would maybe put all the shoe on higher shelf? No....Just have a couple of thai girls uselessly pushing the water around with brooms instead...
Some shop built walls in front of their shop, but left a big hole in the middle to come and go...as if the water wont find the hole...

Government even provided paper bags to make sandbags...TIT

I m amazed they managed to keep bangkok dry so far
