JJ...5555, yes it was very "ethnocentric" but then again all those 178 people had spent a good deal of money and gone thru alot of trouble to ascertain this and I suppose the lady just wanted them to get their money's worth lol!

In case anyone is curious, Thai citizens can retain their Thai Citizenship. However, we were advised to keep mrs atl's Thai passport and Thai ID card current and not let either one expire as it would be "a hassle that we would not want to deal with if either one were to lapse," that came from the Thai Embassy in D.C.

EPC, now that she is American I am gonna tell her to get fired so she can collect welfare and the govt will pay her to sit at home, watch thai movies on youtube and eat cheeto's
I am kidding, and I wish I could claim this..... aside from her trips back home, this was the first time she has ever missed a complete day from work (and she has also never been late) in almost 5 years in the US

atl, I really enjoyed your "boobie blosom" post! As MickTheKick said, "for giving us such a great insight into a ceremony anyone has an idea about but only a happy few have ever witnessed..." We all shared your and Mrs. atl's joy. It reminded me of my wife's exuberant joy upon getting her visa approved and her proudly applying a flag luggage tag to her suitcase.

I am telling you guys, just about half the people there were in tears......makes me think what other country derives that much sentiment upon becoming a citizen???
I don't want to sound cynical, but for the vast majority of Indians it means they have many more choices about applying for jobs in the US (mostly in IT), and also important is that they can go home to India for a few weeks each year and be assured that they can get back into the US after their trip home. This is not as trivial as you many think for persons without a US passport.

Just make Sure the Wifey keeps her Thai Passport Current!
Last year my Wife whom is an Australian Citizen lost her Mother and we had to high tale it within a few hrs to Thailand, She went on The Aussie Passport and could only stay 30 days,if she had keep the Thai one up to date it would of saved a lot of problems.

No thanks, when a population gets over 1 billion I figure things are a little crowded. Know a Punjab (the taxi drivers of the world) who's just returned to Farangland after getting married in India. Has come back minus his new wife - customs are vetting her, could be at least 6 months before he gets her in...thats a long time wanking.
Reading here I see the Yanks have this procedure, but didn't know it was adopted eslwhere. Too many sad old gits like us marrying young nubile CIS girls that really have boyfriends at home and want free entry to a western country

congrats, that is a big deal and one for Mr and Mrs atl to be proud of. The mother of a local Thai friend did the same just a year or so back, and I took her over a little gift that night when they had a celebration. She was beaming all evening.
Am curious about the rights of mrs. atl in Thailand though. My wife and I have talked about the green card vs citizen thing, as we are concerned about her being able to buy property and build a retirement place for her when she gets older. Does retaining the Thai passport also mean dual citizenship? If not, then I wonder how property ownership is affected.
We expect myself to kick the bucket before mrs balls does, and mrs balls has expressed an interest in growing old in Thailand, not Amerika. She said if she grows old here, "no one take care me!" She expects that growing old in her village would be preferable. I think spending my last few years there wouldn't be so bad either, unless I get murdered by a family member for insurance money, lol.
